When you order a Red Bull and Vodka at the Sports Column bar in Iowa City, you might not get served.
That’s because the bar recently settled out of court with leading energy drink maker Red Bull over its use of imitation Red Bull brands in cocktails in which the drink was ordered by name.
Red Bull North America Inc. had sued the bar earlier this year over its use of “Roaring Lion” energy drink in Red Bull’s place.
From now on, when an order is made at the bar for a Red Bull drink, wait staff or bartenders have to tell customers they are using a different drink – and let the customer then decide whether or not they want it.
Red Bull has filed more than one lawsuit in recent years against other bars as an attempt to protect its hard-won brand equity in on-premise situations.
