Master Distiller John R. Lunn Joins Popcorn Sutton Distilling from George Dickel

Newport, Tenn. – March 16, 2015 – Popcorn Sutton Distilling today announced that John R. Lunn has assumed the position of Master Distiller with the company. The move comes as the company continues to expand its regional presence and distribution nationwide.

Lunn most recently served as Director of the Southern Hub and Master Distiller with multinational alcoholic beverage company, Diageo. In this role, John was responsible for distillation, maturation, bottling and visitor center operations at the George Dickel Distillery in Tullahoma, Tenn. and the modernization of the historic Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville, Ky.

John is a graduate of Vanderbilt University, and was born and raised in the small Middle Tennessee community of Spring Hill, making his new position as Master Distiller at Popcorn Sutton a homecoming of sorts.

“The chance to work in Tennessee was certainly appealing to me, but what excited me most is the incredible opportunity here,” said John Lunn. “It’s not often you get to be associated with an American folk hero like Popcorn Sutton. The uniqueness of that, combined with the talented team and state-of-the-art production facility that’s been developed here, were simply too good to pass up.”

Popcorn Sutton takes its name from its creator, Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton, a legendary bootlegger from Cocke County, Tenn., which is known as the moonshine capital of the world. Using a 100-year-old family recipe passed down through generations, Popcorn made his “likker” by hand in the backwoods of Tennessee, selling it out of the back of his Ford Model A truck. He gained notoriety throughout the South for the quality of his product and his various run-ins with law enforcement. In 2009, after being convicted of several offenses related to moonshine production, he committed suicide rather than report to Federal prison, growing his legend further.

Today, Popcorn Sutton is made using the same original small batch recipe as its namesake – from mash to jar, and distilled in three copper pot stills designed by Popcorn. The company’s new 50,000 square foot distillery is located just a few miles from Popcorn’s home in Newport, Tenn.

Popcorn Sutton is currently available in 20 states across the Southeast and Midwest with new locations and markets being added daily. Additionally, Popcorn Sutton Distilling has begun rolling out a flavored liquors line under the Mrs. Sutton’s™ brand, named after Popcorn Sutton’s living widow, Pam Sutton.
