Japanese firm to supply CoQ10, recently deemed as GRAS

American beverage manufacturers will have a Japanese import to add to their growing arsenal of functional ingredients as the Asahi Kasei Pharma Corporation will start supplying CoQ10 to the U.S. market.

The company has been producing CoQ10 – short for Coenzyme Q10 – for about 25 years, according to Nutraingredients.com. The product can already be found in food and beverages in Japan, but it was only recently granted “generally recognized as safe” status in the U.S.

Stateside, the additive is primarily used in dietary supplements, though it has crept into food and drinks – including six energy drinks launched in 2007, Nutra reported.

The additive has been studied for its role in cognitive health, hearth health and anti aging in oral and topical formulations.
