Review: Agua Rica

Agua Rica is a new line of beverages created to bring traditional agua fresca flavors to the masses in a convenient ready-to-drink form. The brand’s initial three flavors include Hibiscus, Cucumber, and Lemonade, each packaged in 12 oz PET bottles.

The products are sweetened with 26-29 g of cane sugar per bottle, clocking in at 100-120 calories each.. Lemonade and Cucumber both feature lemon juice concentrate (6% and 3%, respectively) and flavorings while the Hibiscus flavor is made with hibiscus flowers.

When it comes to taste, all three of these products are quite pleasant and on the sweeter side. The Hibiscus flavor is a riff on a classic jamaica agua fresca; it’s clean, balanced and full of hibiscus flavor. The Cucumber SKU is accurate to its source flavor, although we’d love to see actual cucumber as an ingredient in addition to the mild amount of lemon used. . Finally, there’s Lemonade, which is a pink colored lemonade that’s a nicely executed version of the classic.

As mentioned earlier, Agua Rica is packaged in a 12 oz. PET bottles. It has a white label that features a simple design that includes an illustrated logo, illustrated image of the key ingredient, and the flavor name. It’s very intuitive and easy to read and the product looks like something that is artisanal and carefully crafted.

However, the desired tie to agua frescas seems a bit lost in the execution. Only one of the three products is a traditional agua fresca flavor, while the other two are basically lemonades. Furthermore, there’s nothing on the bottle that really describes the product’s purpose.

That being said, what we see in front of us is a product that, despite tasting good and having a clean label, feels somewhat unclear in its purpose. For a drink that has over 100 calories per bottle, we think that this will be pretty critical, especially when competing against a sea of other products at retail.

From our perspective, dialing down the sugar and getting to under 100 calories would be quite helpful -- and we think focusing in on either lemonade or traditional agua frescas would make for a more cohesive and understandable lineup.
