Review: Carrot Coconut Smoothie (2014)

When it comes to flavor combinations, carrot and coconut isn’t exactly like peanut butter and jelly. It’s one of those pairings that’s tough for your senses to figure out before you try it. Fortunately, it tastes quite good, with the carrot, apple, and coconut (from coconut water, coconut meat, and coconut oil) pairing together to create something that’s moderately sweet and creamy. A touch of cinnamon gives it an almost spiced note, which helps round out the flavors before ending with plenty of carrot flavor. The product also contains added lucuma and maca, but they don’t have an identifiable flavor. What’s also nice about this flavor (as well as the Apple variety, although we didn’t care for that one as much) is that it doesn’t have banana. As a result, the body is not nearly as thick. In fact, it’s on the thinner side of what we’d call a smoothie. Still, we appreciate that the coconut flavor tastes much more pure without the banana. On the outside, the product comes in the same 8 and 16 oz. containers that you’ll find used on the other flavors. Unlike some of their other flavors where we preferred the smaller size, we actually think we’d go for the 16 oz. version of this one. Beyond that, we like the Genius Juice brand, especially in how they’ve given it personality and made the product feel approachable rather than serious. Then again, this product, with its bright orange color, isn’t obviously a coconut-based product based on visual appearance alone. In addition, obtaining USDA Organic certification (it does contain organic ingredients) would be a smart move for future versions. All in all, this product is definitely one of the more unique flavors of the lineup, and we appreciate both the innovation and the execution of it.
