Review: Kale Coconut Smoothie (2014)

Being completely honest, this is one of those products that doesn’t lure you in on the first couple of sips. The product blends a plethora of ingredients, including coconut water, coconut meat, banana, kale, chia seeds, mesquite, maca, chlorella and spirulina, into a unique tasting smoothie. It starts out very thick -- to the point where the product clumps around the neck of the bottle no matter how hard you shake it -- and with a pretty heavy note of greens. If you’re like us and you keep drinking, it definitely gets better as your palate warms up from the subtle sweetness from the coconut water and banana. You can taste the kale, but it’s not overly assertive beyond the first note, while the other ingredients blend together to create the drink’s smooth finish. Nutritionally, the product weighs in at 150 calories, 5g of fat, 2g of fiber, 13g of sugars, 3g of protein and also features electrolytes and vitamins. On the outside, the bottle, which is available as either an 8 oz. or 16 oz., has a simple but playful appearance. The eye immediately goes to the “genius” face that’s in the center of the bottle. We like the company's approach of listing ingredients as chat bubbles -- this seems much more engaging than a standard list. However, we would like it if they made the size of the Genius Juice logo a bit larger than it currently is. Overall, this is a great first effort from Genius Juice. It’s both innovative and a very enjoyable tasting product.
