Review: Grapefruit

(Last Updated: Dec 05, 2014 at 12:10 PM)
This variety of KeVita’s Master Brew Kombucha blends its base of kombucha with grapefruit juice, grapefruit flavor, ginger, stevia, and purple carrot coloring. Much like the ginger variety, this product’s fruit flavoring does a great job of masking the flavor of the kombucha and the added stevia. That said, this is definitely one of the nicer tasting flavors of the initial Master Brew Kombucha lineup. It starts out with a pleasant and relatively smooth base of kombucha, which features notes of tea, sugar, and a light vinegar note. From there, the grapefruit takes over, offering a sharp citrus note with a light tartness. Finally, we taste just a touch of the stevia, but the lingering flavor of the grapefruit and the product’s effervescence definitely mask it quickly. Ultimately, we’re not sure that we’d pick this over a full-calorie kombucha, but it’s very close. And, of course, this product, which is USDA Organic, has its low-calorie count as one of its key selling points. We think it’s pretty smart on the part of KeVita to have added a calorie callout on the front of the bottle. It’s an approach that we haven’t seen in kombucha to date and one that’s certainly going to catch some eyes. Otherwise, we really like the look of the bottle. It’s clean, modern, and artisanal looking to the point where we honestly feel as though this design is stronger than KeVita’s flagship probiotic line. Overall, Kevita has done a nice job crafting this to be an enjoyable product with a unique selling point.
