Review: Clean Energy Berry (2014)

The Berry flavor of Runa Clean Energy takes a slightly different approach than the Original variety, starting with the fact that it is not a zero-calorie product. Instead, it’s sweetened with sugar to the modest tune of 17g per can (the product has 80 calories) and is flavored with natural berry flavoring. The flavor is, like the first version that we sampled, best compared to carbonated raspberry iced tea. Since we didn’t taste this product side by side with the original version we can’t say what the differences are between the two. But we can say that this version is very enjoyable and well-executed. And being a guayusa-based energy drink, this product packs in 120mg of natural caffeine per can. On the outside, we really like the approach that Runa has taken with the redesign. It feels more visually related to the core brand, while also being much more visually appealing. The use of the guayusa leaf is a smart move, resulting in the subconscious feeling that this is a good-for-you product. Plus, it whets the appetite, which is definitely more than we can say for most energy drinks out there. Overall, a big step up for Runa Clean Energy.
