Review: Fuel (2011)

Posted: Dec 10, 2010 at 9:31 AM (Last Updated: Aug 18, 2011 at 5:31 PM)
Of the Speed Energy lineup, the “Fuel” variety is our favorite in terms of taste. It uses a very sweet and tart orange flavor, which is reminiscent of your typical orange soda. It’s very easy to drink, with a slight bite to the finish -- very much like other orange flavored energy drinks. That said, this is a flavor that we feel like we’ve had many times before, so it’s not something that wows us for its originality. Plus, you have to be willing to down 40 grams of sugars and 160 calories per 12 oz. can (again, not too far off from a CSD). Functionally, the product has taurine, caffeine, glucuronolactone, inositol, ginseng, and guarana -- a fairly standard looking blend. The packaging is a 12 oz. slim can, which they’ve painted completely black. This allows the accent color -- in this case, orange -- to really pop off the can, resulting in a sleek and eye catching appearance. The addition of Robby Gordon’s name will certainly help with consumers who are familiar with him, but it isn’t something that will make or break this product -- it seems like it can stand on its own two feet as an enjoyable energy drink. Overall, a good product for the mainstream energy drink market.
