Review: Vegan Bone Broth

Splendid Spoon’s Vegan Bone broth is a play on the trendy concept of packaged bone broth. While there’s no such thing as vegan bones (unless referring to the bones of vegans), the product is basically a kicked up veggie broth that has been presented in bottled form. Featuring a range of ingredients -- all of which have been cooked -- including shitakes, onions, carrots, celery, bok choy, spinach, ginger, garlic, lemon juice, thai basil, sea salt, spirulina, rosemary and black pepper, the product is definitely not short on flavor. Its base is salty and slightly spiced, with a pretty heavy mushroom flavor taking over from there. Finally, there’s the onions and garlic, which give the product some depth. All in all, it’s quite tasty. However, it’s not really a straight broth as there are pieces of the mushrooms floating in the mix. But we get it; calling it a “vegan bone broth” is sure to catch some eyes (it certainly caught our attention). That being said, this is certainly the most memorable and marketable flavor of the Splendid Spoon line. Furthermore, it seems like the most intuitive of the bunch in that it’s clearly a soup and one that people are drinking rather than consuming with a spoon. That being said, we honestly wonder if vegan bone broth (in several varieties) should be the place that the company focuses its efforts. Overall, it's an innovative and enjoyable product that is the best of the line.
