Review: Yerba Mate

Blending switchel and yerba mate isn’t exactly a combination that seems overly obvious or naturally whets the palate. Fortunately for Up Mountain Switchel, this blend works really well and it manages to offer something totally unique in the process. The yerba mate hits your palate quickly, with a nice note of its naturally grassy flavor. From there, you get the flavor of the switchel. This portion of the product is made with maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, and ginger root. Compared with Up Mountain's other flavors, the switchel flavor in this variety is of slightly reduced strength. This, combined with the added flavor of the yerba mate, makes this product something that is a good starting point. And even if you are well-versed in switchel, this flavor is one that offers a slightly lighter and more thirst-quenching approach. On the packaging front, this product is in the same 12 oz. jar that all of the Up Mountain flavors come in. From a practical perspective, this format isn’t the best for liquid (it’s a jar for jelly or condiments). When you open the cap, it’s virtually impossible not to spill any liquid and the mouth is too wide to easily consume the product right from the jar. However, the label, which is just white and green as opposed to the more colorful labels on the other flavors, feels like a good fit. While we still aren’t fond of the jar, this definitely is the brand's best looking flavor.
