Every sports drink line has “red” colored varieties and Vita Coco Sport has three. In our opinion, the differences between these three flavors are pretty subtle, although we completely understand the company's need for additional flavors (we also appreciate that they didn’t launch blue- or purple- colored products). In any event, of the three, we found the Dragon Fruit to be the most preferable of the bunch. On the flavor end of things, the pink-colored liquid is tart and tangy, with just the right amount of coconut water to balance out the fruit flavor. A touch of sea salt helps blend the two flavors together, while also helping to give the product an authentic sports drink flavor. While the product doesn’t have a very strong coconut water flavor, there’s definitely something unique about the underlying flavor. And lastly, we think that Dragon Fruit seems like a slightly more exciting flavor than Fruit Punch or Black Cherry do. Visually, the product is very well-executed. We really like their choice of the 18 oz. contour bottle, which feels great in your hand and gives the product a naturally slim appearance. The label itself, which is green and features illustrated text, goes nicely with Vita Coco's flagship line, but makes it clear that this is a different product. As far as the sports drink category is concerned, the company's approach, which, lacking the technical design used by so many sports drinks to preach their scientific formulations, feels like something for an everyman rather than an elite athlete. Whether or not this approach helps the product make a dent in the category, the product is certainly a nice bolt-on for a brand that has been hovering around the periphery of the category since its inception. Definitely a line to watch.
