Role Overview

The Head Brewer plays a key role in the success of our brewery. You will oversee all brewing and cellaring operations, ensuring quality, consistency, and high standards in every batch produced. This role requires excellent communication, leadership, and organization skills to coordinate schedules, manage COGS, develop recipes, and ensure smooth day-to-day production.

You will work closely with the Brewmaster, Production Manager, and Quality/QA team to deliver exceptional products while maintaining a positive, high-performance work environment.


Key Responsibilities

1. Brewery Leadership & Operations

  • Lead and supervise the brewing and cellaring team, ensuring smooth daily operations from grain to glass.
  • Create and manage production schedules to meet demand and sales forecasts.
  • Maintain budget targets, including cost per BBL and operational expenses.
  • Partner with suppliers for raw material forecasting, purchasing, and inventory management.
  • Constantly pursue improvements in brewing processes, efficiency, and beer quality.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment, staffing, or production issues promptly.

2. Team & Staff Management

  • Develop and lead a strong, motivated brewing team that meets or exceeds production goals.
  • Plan staffing needs as volume scales and production evolves.
  • Manage inventory with a Just-In-Time approach when feasible.
  • Forecast COGS needs (grain, hops, packaging materials, etc.) for approval.
  • Schedule labor, maintenance days, and production shifts based on operational needs.

3. Brewing & Quality Execution

  • Align brew schedule with sales demand and maintain appropriate tank PAR levels.
  • Foster a continuous improvement culture focused on quality, safety, and efficiency.
  • Recipe development for core, seasonal, and pilot beers.
  • Work closely with QA/Quality Manager to ensure top-tier product quality and quick resolution of any issues on-site or in market.
  • Participate in brewing and cellar shifts to stay hands-on and maintain operational expertise.

4. Administration & Reporting

  • Submit weekly production updates to leadership every Monday.
  • Lead or attend monthly brewing and safety meetings.
  • Maintain accurate brewing, cellaring, and inventory records and logs.

5. Culture & Leadership

  • Build and maintain a positive, respectful, transparent team culture.
  • Partner with leadership to make our brewery an employer of choice in the industry.

Requirements

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift/move 55+ lbs repeatedly and handle full kegs as needed.
  • Comfortable standing for long periods and working in hot, cold, wet, or noisy environments.
  • Ability to bend, climb, kneel, and safely use ladders or elevated platforms.

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of professional brewing equipment, systems, and best practices.
  • Proficiency in cleaning/sanitation and CIP processes.
  • Yeast management and fermentation expertise.
  • Ability to perform quality checks, recordkeeping, and follow SOPs.
  • Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting equipment.
