About the role:

Our summer Brewing intern will work under the supervision of the brewing team to support our increased summer output. The work is geared to both provide a meaningful work and learning experience while adding the additional labor required to meet seasonal demand. Throughout the summer you will work closely with the Brewing Manager and brewing leads for training and teaching. These positions are best suited for students actively working towards a degree in brewing science, fermentation/food science, engineering, or another relevant field. Previous brewing experience is not required.

A breakdown of the core tasks you will master:

  • Daily fermentation monitoring: density, pH, and temperature.
  • All cellar work, including yeast handling, dry hopping, yeast drops, spent grain and high strength solids removal.
  • Prepare, measure, and handle raw materials on hot and cold side operations: hops and hop extracts, malt, and process aides.
  • CIP and SIP operations for all vessels, brewhouse, and transfer lines.
  • Data collection and entry throughout a shift.
  • Adhere to SOPs, checklists, and troubleshooting guides and contribute to edits and process improvements.
  • Manage a self-guided process improvement project and present to the brewing team at the end of your internship.
  • Cleaning and general facilities upkeep.
  • Safely operate a stand-up electric forklift and willingness to be certified within 30 days.
  • Support other production departments as needed.

Additional tasks you will be exposed to during training:

  • Wort production on a 50bbl semi-automated GEA CRAFT-STAR brewhouse.
  • Clarification using a semi-automated, Alfa Laval Brew350 centrifugal separator.

General requirements:

  • Work shifts at the Hood River facility
  • Work a fixed shift schedule: Four consecutive days (specific days TBD); 4x10h; 7am-5pm.
  • Be on time for all shifts, ready to work, with a clear head.
  • Be able to work in a standing position for long periods of time.
  • Be able to lift up to 50lbs safely and without risk of injury to self, others, or company property.
  • Safely operate a stand-up electric forklift and willingness to be certified within 30 days.
  • Work in a safe manner and adhere to all safety protocols.

Your qualifications

  • Working towards a degree in fermentation/food science, engineering, or another relevant field.
  • Must be 21+ years of age.
  • Licensed to drive and access to reliable transportation.
  • Solid references are a must.

The benefits

  • This position pays $18/hr.
  • A monthly tasting room credit of at least $200 to use for beer, meals, and merchandise.
  • $300 stipend for personal protective equipment.
