Review: Grapefruit Green Tea Drink

The Grapefruit flavor of Teapigs Matcha is a straightforward blend of water, grapefruit juice and matcha powder that has 70 calories and 15g of sugar per 11.2 oz. container. Grapefruit is a pretty assertive flavor, but the company has cut it with plenty of water to make it palatable without any added sweetener. The matcha, which adds only a slight hint of green to the liquid, is pretty subdued in terms of the flavor that it adds. That being said, it’s a bit too heavy on the grapefruit juice for our liking (we’d say the same thing about elderflower in the Elderflower variety). We say this both from a flavor and a positioning perspective. As it stands right now, the product tastes like pasteurized grapefruit juice, rather than a tea product that’s flavored with grapefruit. We’d really love to taste more of the matcha. We feel as though this will hurt the product’s chances with those consumers who are into the idea of a matcha-based beverage. Dialing up the matcha flavor would definitely help alleviate this. On the outside, the company has chosen to go with an 11.2 oz. Tetra Pak container with a resealable cap. The overall design is something that we’d describe as straightforward and rather clean. However, it feels as though it’s lacking a visually dominant element to it. Giving “teapigs” and “matcha” a different visual treatment might help. Otherwise, all the text on the front of the carton appears to go together, which is a bit much to take in all at once. Overall, we like the idea of this product, but we feel as though some refinement is necessary.
