AZA Hibiscus Tea, a Detroit-based company, brews refreshing teas made from hibiscus and fresh fruit, using ingredients sourced directly from our farm in Aswan, Egypt. Our mission is to promote mental and physical well-being through the unique properties of hibiscus, known for its ability to support healthy blood pressure, boost immune function, and improve gut health.
Our story began when I was just 12 years old in Limbe, Cameroon. I had a broken PSP and needed money to fix it. I began making and selling hibiscus tea on the streets, using recycled bottles from local bars and creating homemade labels under the nickname "Aza Boy." After weeks of selling tea daily, I finally earned enough to repair my PSP.
Fast forward to 2021, I found myself struggling with depression and took a trip to Egypt to rediscover myself. Over a cup of hibiscus tea served by a friend, childhood memories flooded back. I hadn’t tasted hibiscus in nearly 13 years, and at that moment, I knew I had found my calling: to bring AZA Hibiscus Tea to the world. Today, we’re proud to offer a product that not only tastes amazing, but represents growth, wellness, and a global tradition of hibiscus tea.
The global herbal tea market is expected to reach over $5 billion by 2027, driven by demand for healthier alternatives to traditional caffeinated beverages.
So, why choose AZA? Hibiscus tea is cherished worldwide under many names: karkade in Egypt, sorrel in Jamaica, folere in Cameroon, and zobo in Nigeria. At AZA, we’re bringing this extraordinary variety to a wider audience, honoring its cultural roots while introducing a refreshing, nearly new option to the market.
What makes AZA unique? We use a different strain of hibiscus than most brands. While much of the hibiscus on the market is Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, the large tropical flower, AZA uses the roselle strain, which is smaller, produces a darker brew, and is known for its high antioxidant content and effective blood pressure-lowering properties.
Why Egypt? Egypt boasts some of the world’s best soil, and our farm near the Nile provides rich flavor, minerals, and micronutrients essential to our product's quality.
AZA’s Vision and Future Plans: We’re on a mission to promote mental health and well-being, especially in today’s overstimulated world. As a Gen Z founder, I know the pressures we face—building careers, starting families, buying homes, launching side hustles—all while trying to maintain a social life. Millennials and Gen Z are mentally overburdened, and AZA seeks to be a beacon of relief. We’re not just offering tea; we’re offering a moment of peace, a chance to reset and fuel both mental and physical wellness, reminding our consumers that peace is a necessity, not a privilege.
A Look Ahead
- Shelf-Stable Formulation: To expand marketability, increase distribution, and reduce refrigeration costs, we’re working on a shelf-stable formula, with plans to use alternative sweeteners like agave and Reb M stevia.
- Sustainable Packaging: We’re switching from plastic to sustainable aluminum cans to provide customers with a premium feel, enhance our clean aesthetic, and reduce our carbon footprint.
- Strategic Placement/Marketing: Collaborating with influencers aligned with our mission will help us engage our target market directly and authentically.
AZA Hibiscus Tea is more than a drink—it’s a movement toward mental wellness, cultural appreciation, and sustainability.
