Dad's Old Fashioned Beverages: Blue Cream

Blue Cream

Product Type: Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: bottles & cans
BevNET Review: Dad's Old Fashioned Blue Cream is a sweet and creamy beverage. It doesn't really feel too old fashioned to us...after all, it is a blue colored beverage that is packaged in a 20 oz plastic bottle. The flavor is a bit too sweet. Tone that down and remove some of the blue coloring and you have a much more appealing beverage. In its current state, Dad's Blue Cream is a mediocre beverage that we would not be likely to purchase.

A trip to somewhere special.

Let me be frank about myself. I was born in 1983, and I did not grow up in a family with a lot of history rooted in nostalgia, but I remember drinking cream soda on hot sunny days in the park and loving the flavor. I am a bit of a sugar junky and this hits the spot, but not any cream soda does it for me. A&W and Barts, which are familiar to my neck of the woods were popular, but had a bite to them I didn't enjoy. This is smooth and fulfilling in a way that takes me back. Also I was a big fan of the original Star Wars, which you might ask "what does that have to do with this drink?". Well, there is a scene in the original that they have this blue milky substance that always had me intrigued. I have since bought almost any drink that came in a blue color. Yeah, I know stupid, but in this case I was pleasantly rewarded for my obession. This is not a drink for everyone, but it hits me in the right place on many fields. Now if I could just find a place that carries this drink regularly.

Not the best cream soda.

The Dad's Blue Cream Soda we purchased was in a glass bottle and listed "invert sugar" as an ingredient instead of "high fructose corn syrup". There were other Dad's sodas available, but I chose only this one because it was the only one that did not list "high fructose corn syrup" in the ingredients. As for our opinion, I taste tested this with my three daughters (all under age 8). We all liked it, but could not taste any flavor that would account for the "blue". It was just a cream soda flavor. The flavor was very, very sweet. Four of us split a single 12 oz bottle and no one asked for more. It's just THAT rich. The girls did agree it was better than Sprite. But, with Dad's Blue Cream Soda having 65g of sugar... well, I think this is better reserved for novelty and not really an option for them.

I grew up drinking it and would ride my bicycle 20 miles a day to get one when nobody could take me to the only store that carried it in my town, and no this was not back in the day this was the late 1990's.

This is real good. I'm probably more like it to buy this flavor again.
