Rau is a cold-pressed and raw cacao beverage that is sweetened with monk fruit. From a flavor perspective, this product tastes very much like raw cacao (like what you’d find in a cacao nib). There’s a nice “chocolate” flavor to it, but, like cacao nibs, it does have a bitterness that will take some getting used to. Despite the look of the liquid, which very much resembles chocolate milk, this product is not really rich and creamy, but instead something that’s thin and pretty easy to put down. We really like the bold and natural flavor of the product, however, the monk fruit is something that we could live without; it adds a lingering aftertaste. We appreciate the company's desire to have a zero-sugar beverage, but we think that the current execution might be better suited to another sweetener. And really, our bet is that the type of person that a raw cacao drink is going to appeal to wouldn’t be averse to another form of sweetener. On the packaging front, we think the company has done an exceptional job from an aesthetics perspective. The color choice for the label pops very nicely against the brown backdrop of the liquid, while the label is polished, easy to read, and definitely appealing. The only concern we have is that the front panel doesn’t give the drinker a sense of what the beverage is going to taste like. Overall, a very unique concept; the execution just needs a little bit of refinement.
