Manufacturer's Brand Overview [Edit]

Oogavé is the first soda to be sweetened with 100% organic agave nectar. Not only is this a fantastic sweetener, but the garbage found in traditional sodas has been removed. Artificial flavors, artificial colors, salt and preservatives such as sodium benzoate are not used. Oogavé only has four principal ingredients: Agave nectar, carbonated water, citric acid, and natural flavors/colors . . . nothing that cannot be found in nature. We offer a soda the way mother nature intended. The product was conceived in the first organic restaurant in Denver. We wanted to offer all-natural sodas in a fountain form but there was no such thing. The national brand of "natural sodas" that offered bag-in-box for fountains was made with high fructose corn syrup. After three months of experimenting and many, many recipes, we came upon formulas for totally natural sodas that would work in a fountain. Oogavé is now also available in four-packs of glass bottles at major natural foods retailers around the country. Oogavé was designed to appeal not only to the health- and body-conscious, but to people who just want something good to drink. Of course it has less sugar, and of course it has a very low glycemic index, but most important, it tastes great. The complex honey-like flavor of agave nectar lends itself to every variety we produce. All the flavor. All the fun. None of the junk.

Strawberry Rhubarb

BevNET Review: The strawberry rhubarb flavor from Oogave Sodas is pleasantly minimalist. The highly-carbonated beverage has a subtle strawberry note that culminates with a dry, faint rhubarb finish. The pairing of strawberry and rhubarb may not jump out as our first thirst quenching soda choice however the flavor profile is done well here. The Agave sweetener adds a nice contemporary touch to a product type that sometimes struggles to find new varieties. The soda comes in a glass bottle with a clear label; its minimalist design certainly plays into the “craftiness” of the product but that could make it hard to find on a cooler rack. The tagline above the logo is a bit difficult to read and may not even be necessary on the front panel. Oogave has a done a nice job of creating an enjoyable, high-end soda. Our only immediate recommendation may be to find a way to enhance the package for a single-serve setting.Reviewed on: 2/4/2011

Vanilla Cream

BevNET Review: Unlike the strawberry rhubarb, vanilla cream from Oogave Sodas is a much more traditional soda offering. All of the elements are present on the nose; a sweet and inviting vanilla taste that breaks over a full cream finish. The use of agave nectar in lieu of corn sugar/cane sugar is less apparent in this SKU as the product falls right into place with countless other highly sweet vanilla cream flavored sodas. The product is packaged exactly like the strawberry rhubarb with the only difference being a color change of certain text. Compared to the “old” Oogave labels, we appreciate the contemporary, minimalist approach; they may, however, have gone too far and removed some label elements that held their shelf presence more firmly.Reviewed on: 2/4/2011

Watermelon Cream

BevNET Review: Oogave's Watermelon Cream is one of the more unique flavors of the lineup, with notes of watermelon and "cream" being rounded out the subtle flavor of agave. It's a flavor that we certainly can't say we have much experience with (at least in a CSD), but it's also a refreshing change from some of the other flavors in the lineup. Plus, they kept the cream flavor at bay, which we appreciate. Packaging fits with the others, but being a fruit soda, it seems like some sort of fruit imagery might be beneficial. Mandarin-Key Lime

BevNET Review: Mandarin-Key Lime is another enjoyable entry from Oogave. Using a blend of citrus flavors (in the form of mandarin orange and key lime), the drink has a fruity aroma that gives way to its sweet body. They've managed to create a flavor that's very accurate and works well with the carbonation, plus the use of agave is great for both flavor and as a sweetener. Our only concern we have is that the drink, which is certainly skewed towards a label reading crowd, doesn't have any juice in it. That being said, we'd likely choose one of the other flavors -- although the execution of this product is still very good.Reviewed on: 8/1/2008

Grapefruit

BevNET Review: Grapefruit flavored soda is one of those things that we've rarely seen work well. Fortunately for Oogave, the use of agave seems to be the difference maker, allowing the citrus flavor to shine through without being overwhelmed by the accompanying sweetener (as it often does in sugar/HFCS sweetened drinks). The result is a drink that has a very light mouth feel, which it should given the drink's modest level of sugar and caloric content. As with the other flavors, the packaging has pop to it, but we'd love to see a USDA Organic logo in place of the seal of approval from Esteban. Reviewed on: 8/1/2008

Ginger Ale

BevNET Review: Ginger Ale was our favorite flavor of the lineup. First, the flavor of the drink is truly enjoyable, having achieved a balance between the ginger and agave that's near perfect. We love the drink's light mouth feel, as well as the smooth transition between the mild spice and the delicate sweetness of the agave. Packaging is bright and attractive, but, like the other flavors, we'd love to see an organic logo on it (perhaps in place of Esteban's logo). Overall, a mainstream flavor that provides the perfect showcase for what Oogave is all about. Reviewed on: 8/1/2008

Esteban's Root Beer

BevNET Review: As far as root beers go, Esteban's Rootbeer is good, but not great, especially when there are many other enjoyable flavors in the lineup. Specifically, the drink lacks the creaminess (even just a touch would be nice) to balance the drink's wintergreen and licorice flavors. And, just to pick nits, we think that a different accent color (currently bright yellow) would help whet the consumer's appetite for this product. Overall, it's good, but definitely not as good as the other flavors in the lineup.Reviewed on: 8/1/2008

Esteban's Cola

BevNET Review: Esteban's Cola is a super premium cola whose point of differentiation is the use of agave, which functions primarily as the drink's sweetener. In terms of flavor, it tastes like cola (how else can you describe cola??), but is clearly of much higher quality. Unlike competing super premium colas who have earthy tasting formulations, Oogave delivers a mainstream tasting drink that finishes with a cool note of agave. Appearance of the product is attractive and unique, with a well executed Earthy theme to the label. In terms of areas for improvement, we have two suggestions. First, the product doesn't promote it's natural and organic ingredients, which are undoubtedly important to the type of consumer that will adopt an agave soda. Second, it is unclear who Esteban is (he's the creator, which you can learn via their web site) or why some flavors bear his name and others do not. Fortunately though, these are minor points for a product that delivers superb flavor and a unique approach to the CSD market.Reviewed on: 8/1/2008
