Review: Grape and Ginger

(Last Updated: Oct 29, 2014 at 10:58 AM)
Captain’s Neck & Co.'s Grape and Ginger variety is a 40-calorie product that’s made with 20 percent juice and is sweetened with sugar and stevia. From a taste perspective, it tastes more like grape and citrus than it does grape and ginger. This might be the result of the bitterness of the stevia fooling the palate, but the lack of ginger spice is definitely somewhat of an issue. In addition, it does taste like a stevia-sweetened beverage, although the company's decision to cut it with sugar was a good one. That said, if you’re comparing it against other stevia-based sodas, it is a pleasant tasting option. However, there’s plenty of room to make it even better. Packaging is a clear 12 oz. longneck glass bottle with a paper label. It looks the part of a “craft” soda that was made in small batches, but we have a few concerns. For starters, the word name is, especially with the large type treatment and placement on the label, distracting and confusing. More importantly, it doesn’t sound like something that’s brandable or would ever roll off the tongue of a consumer. Even if the company doesn’t change the name, shortening it to “Captains Neck” would be a good idea. Our second issue is with placement of the flavor name. It’s easy to miss, which makes it difficult to figure out what the product is. If this is a product that’s supposed to be about “better for you” and “craft,” then these things should be much more prominent. As it stands right now, you have to pick up the bottle and look closely to figure out what this product is. That’s not going to help this product. Overall, the concept of this product is good, but it needs refinement in several areas.
