BevNET Review: Vitaminwater’s “coco-refresh” is a blend of 10 percent coconut water, sweetener (fructose and sucrose), natural flavors, and added vitamins and electrolytes. As soon as you remove the cap, the strong aroma of coconut and pineapple flavoring tells you that this is going to be a pretty sweet tasting product. And that’s exactly what it is, with pineapple and coconut flavoring being what this drink is all about. The addition of 10 percent “real coconut water” is great, but that, combined with the note about “coconut-y bits” on the back, might make consumers think that it’s not from concentrate. In any event, this drink seems like it will most likely appeal to existing vitaminwater consumers who haven’t gotten into the coconut water craze yet. Functionally, the drink’s B vitamin and electrolyte content is a nice value add, but we think that this is primarily a refreshment beverage. Visually, it’s more of the same for vitaminwater, with a metallic lime green accent color that is using the same template design as the rest of the brand. That said, it’s easy to miss this flavor amidst the rest of the brand, so if they are hoping to catch some of the coconut water hype, this might not be the best design to do it with. Overall, a decent entry, but rather than feeling authentic and innovative (like the vitaminwater of the old days), this seems like a move that is chasing the curve.Reviewed on: 6/26/2012

Stur-D

Product Type:Sports Drinks: Sports Drink; Container: 20 oz PET
BevNET Review: Sweetened with a blend of sugar and stevia, Stur-D is actually one of the better tasting stevia enhanced beverages that we’ve seen from Coca-Cola. Still, it has 100 calories per bottle, so it’s definitely something that isn’t for the extremely conscious consumer. The drink has a pretty standard passion fruit flavor, which is pleasing the palate. The off-putting blue color's purpose is to draw a literal tie to the “blue agave” flavoring that’s used in the drink. Unfortunately, there’s no actual agave in the drink, which, given the product’s placement in retailers such as Whole Foods, is certainly going to seem misleading to consumers. Functionally, the drink has vitamin D (hence the name Stur-D), vitamin C, B vitamins, electrolytes, and calcium – all pretty standard for the Vitaminwater line. Packaging is blue and silver, which, compared to other Vitaminwater flavors, isn’t exactly appealing to the senses (it looks more like candy than a beverage). xxx (triple antioxidants)

BevNET Review: Vitaminwater XXX is named for its “triple antioxidants” formula, which specifically refers to the acai, blueberry, and pomegranate flavors that make up the brand. While the product contains no juice, it does use fruit extracts to derive its pleasant fruit flavor. However, we find it difficult to differentiate between the three advertised flavors. Still, the flavor is refreshing and quenching, and we’d best compare it to a sweeter (almost too sweet), stronger version of the Formula 50 variety. Packaging is the trademark Vitaminwater design, with the color black being used to complement the dark red hue of the liquid. The name “XXX” is an attempt to be hip, and we think that Vitaminwater can pull it off – it fits well with what the brand stands for. Overall, a worthy entry to this brand.Reviewed on: 4/4/2007

BevNET Review: Glaceau’s B vitamin and electrolyte drink, Charge has a lemon lime flavor that drinks very much like a sports drink. In fact, if this product were just a bit more yellow and had a hint of green in it, we’d probably mistake it for Lemon Lime Gatorade. Still, the product gets the job done and it does drink more smoothly and cleanly than Gatorade. As always, the product is packaged in the standard Glaceau bottle, with a dark green color tone being assigned to this product’s label. In this case, the dark green color makes the black text on top of it a bit hard to read. And, lastly, there’s the color of the liquid, which is, shall we say, less than appetizing (you’ll need to see it in person to understand). Overall, it’s a good product, but it’s honestly somewhat hard to get excited about it – nothing terribly innovative as far as the brand goes.Reviewed on: 4/4/2007

BevNET Review: With “Perform,” Glaceau is attempting the delicate straddle between enhanced water and isotonic sports drink; it does it pretty darn well. Adding extra b-vitamins and electrolytes to a clean-tasting lemon-lime drink doesn’t hurt the flavor too much – there’s a tiny bit of saltiness at the end that indicates the electrolytes are there, but none of the soapy texture of normal isotonics. It’s pretty easy to imagine this attractive product becoming the recovery drink of choice at Yoga and Pilates studios across the country; whether it grabs the Sunday softball crowd is another question entirely.Reviewed on: 6/17/2005

BevNET Review: defense is raspberry-apple (c+zinc) flavor from Glaceau that is designed to keep you healthy. Zinc and vitamin C are thought by many to help the body avoid getting sick. The raspberry-apple combination is surprisingly tasty and very natural in its flavor. We love the drink's label which provides advice on how to call in sick (when you actually aren't). What other beverage out there offers a solution to staying healthy, but keeps your sick-day needs in mind?! As usual, this is an fun, edgy flavor that tastes great.Reviewed on: 4/8/2005

BevNET Review: Vital-t is interesting new flavor Glaceau. It is made using Rooibos tea extract with lemon flavor. Rooibos is an herb grown in South Africa that has a long tradition as a herbal remedy, particularly when brewed as tea. After drawing some interesting parallels between Sex and the City and Golden Girls the label states, "grow up but don't grow old,. that's why we've created this drink packed with antioxidants to keep you looking and feeling young at heart." The flavor is refreshing and clean. And like so much of the Glaceau line, it blends popular culture into its brand image in a forceful and compelling way.Reviewed on: 1/6/2005

BevNET Review: formula 50 is a strange concept for a beverage. The grape-flavored drink's label reads, "inspired by today's most talked about artist, hottest record producer, and soon-to-be movie star, this not-so-hypnotic tonic contains (hint, hint) 50 percent of many of the important vitamins that you need every day." Now you won't likely find this rapper "in da club" drinking formula 50, but we have to hand it to Glaceau, this is a great tasting drink. The grape flavor is natural and not too-sweet. We’re not quite sure what exactly is causing the medicinal taste (see the long list of ingredients…), but it definitely impacts our ability to enjoy this product. BevNET Review: Power-C is a berry flavored Vitamin Water from Glaceau. Featuring the flavor of dragonfruit, this beverage has been enhanced with Vitamin C and taurine (an amino acid, most famous for its use in energy drinks). The flavor has a very light berry taste with a slightly bitter finish. BevNET Review: Kiwi Strawberry flavored Focus Vitamin Water is a refreshing flavored water enhanced with vitamins. The berry-like flavor does a good job of quenching our thirst without the calories (only 40 per serving). In addition, this beverage is fortified with vitamin A and ginkgo biloba for mental relaxation. BevNET Review: The reformulated Peach-Mango Endurance is a large improvement over the original version. We find the new version to be much cleaner and refreshing, with the fruit flavors providing a sweet splash of flavor to this otherwise light product. The use of ribose ("the primary source of cellular energy") as this product's key ingredient is a unique twist to the product, but it's not likely to get extra mainstream attention as the result of this. However, this product still has a lot to offer with the combination of low carbs/calories and great taste -- so we don't think that will matter all that much.Reviewed on: 6/22/2004

BevNET Review: Defense is a mildly flavored sweet lemon flavored water beverage. We know that’s a mouthful – but what really counts is that this beverage is refreshing and tastes great. The sweet lemon flavor is very mild and has a nice sweet finish. Fortified with several vitamins and Echinacea, this beverage is perfect for warding off colds and just feeling good in general. BevNET Review: Balance Glaceau Vitamin Water is a cran-grapefruit water that is specially formulated for gymanist-type athletes and those “simply requiring equilibrium in their lives.” The flavor has similar traits to the other Glaceau Vitamin Waters – specifically in the lightness of flavor and slight bitter aftertaste – but if it’s energy you want, this is a great drink to try. (Side note - The cranberry – grapefruit flavor actually does a good job of concealing the bitterness) In addition, we like the fact that the entire bottle contains less than 150 calories.
