Since inception, WEA’s Mexico programs have trained nearly 2,800 women and girls in sustainable practices, leadership and ecological stewardship

More than 835,000 people reached through environmental initiatives and community education

For the fifth consecutive year, to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month and Día de los Muertos, Mijenta Tequila, the award-winning, sustainable and additive-free tequila from the highlands of Jalisco, today announced that it is partnering with Women’s Earth Alliance (WEA), which strengthens women’s leadership to restore ecosystems, build resilient local economies, and support the health and well-being of communities.

From September 15 through November 2, a portion of Mijenta's sales proceeds will go to support WEA's Women’s Sustainability & Health programs in Mexico. During this period, Mijenta will donate to WEA $1.00 from each bottle depleted to help fund this initiative.

Since the beginning of the partnership in 2022, WEA has identified and partnered with six women-led groups across Mexico that are advancing food sovereignty, strengthening water resilience, restoring ecosystems and building eco-enterprises that support sustainable livelihoods. Together, these organizations have achieved significant and measurable impact:

  • Nearly 2,800 women and girls trained in sustainable practices, leadership and ecological stewardship

  • More than 835,000 people reached through environmental initiatives and community education

  • 3,500 hectares of marine ecosystems, including coral reefs and kelp forests, protected and restored annually

  • More than 300 hectares of cloud forest conserved and restored

  • Nearly 35 hectares of agroforestry systems established to strengthen biodiversity and food production

“Five years of partnership with Mijenta has helped women-led organizations across Mexico deepen work that is rooted in their communities and built for the long term,” said Melinda Kramer, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of Women’s Earth Alliance. “From restoring cloud forests and protecting marine ecosystems to strengthening local food systems and women-led enterprises, these leaders are showing what becomes possible when women have the resources, relationships, and support to put their knowledge and vision into action. We are deeply grateful to Mijenta for investing alongside these women and helping their leadership and impact continue to grow.”

“From preserving ancestral agricultural products and methods, to protecting endangered forests and oceans, to building educational programs, to defending women’s and indigenous rights, I continue to be overwhelmed and inspired by the work the women leading these programs have accomplished across Mexico,” said Elise Som, Mijenta’s Co-Founder and Director of Sustainability. “For the past five years, Mijenta’s partnership with the amazing team at Women’s Earth Alliance to help strengthen, grow and foster the capabilities of these small, community-focused organizations is one of the initiatives that I am most proud of. I look forward to what we can accomplish in the future as we continue to collaborate.”

“Supporting the development of female leaders here in Mexico is a mission I am extremely passionate about, and I am incredibly proud that we have been able to help these amazing organizations deepen their work and expand their impact,” said Ana María Romero, Mijenta’s Maestra Tequilera. “While we do it through the craft of tequila, we share a commitment to supporting those who work the land and pass down the traditions of our community. Through this partnership, we are thrilled to contribute to building the next generation of leaders working to address the structural, environmental and economic challenges that many women in Mexico face on a daily basis.”

WEA’s program in Mexico has supported six local, women-led organizations across the country focused on addressing critical issues facing their communities.

  • Las Cañadas, Bosque de Niebla (Huatusco, Veracruz): In the foothills of Pico de Orizaba, women are training people from the local community in agroecology—restoring soils, regenerating ecosystems, and strengthening communities. They are also helping to conserve more than 600 seed species and varieties through their nursery and seed bank. The cooperative supports this work through the production of artisanal cheeses, eggs and natural wellness products, for which the women manage production, distribution and sales.

  • Mujeres de la Tierra, Mujeres de la Periferia (Milpa Alta, Estado de Mexico): With a focus on educating and engaging future generations, the organization established La Escuelita de la Tierra, where women and young people gather to study agroecology, traditional cooking and sustainable construction. Every week, community members gain hands-on experience in bioconstruction using adobe and bahareque. The Escuelita has become a vibrant gathering place where knowledge of native corn, beans and squash is passed between generations, and where traditional foods such as tamales and tortillas are prepared as part of a living relationship with the land.

  • Sirenas de México (Baja California and Quintana Roo): Along Mexico's coasts, a group that began with 3 women has grown to 75 who serve as ocean guardians. Members have received Dive Master certification and specialized training in ghost-net removal and sustainable fishing practices. From Baja California to Yucatán, the Sirenas are helping protect priority marine ecosystems, including kelp forests, removing abandoned fishing gear, producing biofertilizers from fishing waste and contributing to citizen science that can inform marine policy.

  • Poj Kaa (Tlahuitoltepec, Oaxaca): In drought-prone communities of Oaxaca, women from Poj Kaa installed rainwater harvesting systems, which are helping to irrigate crops and sustain local families. Access to stored rainwater is improving nutrition, easing the labor often carried by women and allowing families to rely less heavily on inconsistent water sources.

  • Afrocaracolas (Costa Chica, Guerrero): This group of Afro-Mexican women created a new source of income and community nourishment through a women-run aquaculture farm, demonstrating that this type of initiative is real, viable, and transformative. By raising and selling fish locally, they are strengthening their economic autonomy while helping their community build a more secure and locally rooted food system.

  • Unión de los Pueblos de Morelos (Morelos): Through hosting agroecology workshops that culminate in local bazaars, UPM helps local women sell agroecologically produced foods, generating income while showcasing sustainable practices.
