Pomegranate

Product Type:Other; Container: 16.9 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Of the two pomegranate flavors that have been added to the KeVita lineup, this one is definitely the better one. It has 3 percent juice vs 1 percent in the Pomegranate Coconut variety, resulting in a slightly stronger and tarter pomegranate flavor. This helps smooth out the underlying fermented flavor, making this product much more palatable. However, it lacks the bite that’s found in most kombucha products, making the fermented note feel somewhat out of place (it comes from added apple cider vinegar, it seems). Functionally, the product has four strains of live probiotics, but, given its flavor, we question how many consumers will choose this over alternative means of adding probiotics to their diets. We’d say the same about the packaging, which, with its 16 oz. glass bottle, doesn’t feel overly original. That, in turn, makes us wonder what about KeVita would make a consumer become a loyal drinker. Overall, this product is among the better KeVita flavors, but we’d like to see them work on improving the branding and positioning before adding additional flavors. Reviewed on: 10/11/2011

Pomegranate Coconut

Product Type:Other; Container: 16.9 oz Glass
BevNET Review: KeVita’s Pomegranate Coconut flavor is a recent addition to the lineup and, as the name implies, the product uses coconut water in its formulation. That said, the drink has a noticeable coconut aroma to it, but otherwise it smells like fruit flavor and vinegar. And that’s pretty much how it tastes, with a light note of coconut, pomegranate juice, and apple cider vinegar. The drink is sweetened with stevia, which isn’t overly noticeable when you drink it, but it’s definitely present in the drink’s finish. This variety, which, like the other KeVita flavors, drinks like a cousin of kombucha, is lighter in body and calories (40 per bottle) than their non-coconut water varieties. Still, we think that the fuller flavor of its Pomegranate counterpart is more enjoyable than this one. Packaging is a 16 oz. glass bottle, which, thanks to its similarities to GT’s Kombucha, definitely looks like something that is fermented and contains probiotics. The label design is relatively clean, with the exception of the flavor name “sparkling probiotic pomegranate coconut refreshment.” However, the drink could do a better job of creating its own identity and personality. As it stands now, the product feels somewhat sterile and reserved. Overall, it’s good, but could be better.Reviewed on: 10/11/2011

Strawberry Acai

Product Type:Juice: Coconut Water and Juice; Container: 16 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Being one of the two coconut water enhanced flavors of the KeVita line, this variety is sure to catch some eyeballs given the buzz surrounding that ingredient nowadays. However, the flavor in this product doesn’t really line up with the name Strawberry Acai. Neither of those fruit flavors are easily found in this formulation, with coconut and apple instead being the dominant flavors. The vinegar note that’s found at the finish quickly washes away the fruit flavor, leaving behind a lingering note of bitterness. Still, it drinks better than most kombucha products (which we suspect are this drink’s primary competition) that are on the market today. Functionally, the product contains 20+ billion CFUs (probiotic content) at the time of bottling, but we can’t tell you how that will work from a functional perspective. Packaging is a 16 oz. glass bottle that feels like a cousin of GT’s Kombucha. That said, latching on to the kombucha consumer seems like a pretty smart move for this brand – they are certainly buyers who are in tune with probiotic beverages. However, giving the product a little more of its own visual identity might be a good thing. Overall, this feels like a marketable drink in the natural channel, but giving it a little more strawberry and acai flavors would make us think more highly of this product.Reviewed on: 3/29/2011

Living Greans

Product Type:Other; Container: 16 oz Glass
BevNET Review: This flavor of KeVita is their phytoalgae superfood drink, which is added to their base probiotic content. From a flavor perspective, this is a very drinkable offering, but it’s probably not the starting point for people who are new to this type of product. Like the Matcha Green Tea variety, this product has a smooth earthy note that helps hide the vinegar flavors that hit your palate during the finish. It’s lightly sweet and effervescent, which makes for an experience that’s balanced but complex. On the outside, the 16 oz. bottle looks like something that’s going to be good for you, especially with the dark green liquid that’s inside the bottle. The front panel has a lot of text crammed below the logo, which makes it hard to quickly grasp what this product is all about. But still, it feels like a quality drink and something that’s healthy for you. Overall, what’s inside the bottle is well-executed, but the outside could use some polish.Reviewed on: 3/29/2011

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 16 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Of the flavors in the KeVita probiotic lineup, Matcha Green Tea is without hesitation the best of the bunch. The taste is extremely palatable, with the smooth flavor of the matcha tea providing an earthiness that helps balance the vinegary notes that are also found in the bottle. It is also the variety that most closely resembles kombucha, which is certainly not a bad thing with that market blossoming. Functionally, it seems to offer similar benefits, with probiotic content and antioxidants being the key components of the drink. Packaging is a 16 oz. bottle that looks very much like a GT’s kombucha bottle (it even has the word “Synergy” on the front panel). Placing the USDA Organic seal on the front will definitely help with the target consumer, but we think that there’s a bit too much text on the front panel. Otherwise, the design is just okay, with the style of the logo seeming at odds with the rest of the package. It has a slight “me-too” feel compared with GT’s, but it’s still some of the nicest packaging available in the probiotic drink category. Overall, the best of the line, but we still feel that it could be improved.Reviewed on: 3/29/2011
