Cinnamon Dulce

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 16 oz can
BevNET Review: The latest flavor to be added to the Starbucks Doubleshot Energy + Coffee line is Cinnamon Dulce, a spiced latte mixture that comes in a 16 ounce can. On the flavor front, it's certainly a drinkable mixture, but not one that instantly whets the appetite the way mocha or vanilla might. There's a relatively accurate cinnamon spice to the mix, which hits your tongue on both the start and finish of the drink. In the middle, it's a relatively milky sweet flavor, with the milk taking charge over what's otherwise a mild base of coffee. That being said, this flavor is pleasant, but probably wouldn’t be something that we'd choose over the existing flavors in the lineup. On the energy front, the product gets its caffeine from natural sources (coffee and guarana), while added taurine, ginseng, maltodextrin, inositol, L-carnitine, and added vitamins aiding the drinks functionality. Packaging is all about the Starbucks logo, which has been given prominent placement on the front of the can. Otherwise, the front of the can is somewhat hard to read, with diagonal streams of color cutting across the black text. While they wisely placed the name of the flavor on the neck, it leaves the package with a certain amount of visual disconnect. Overall, this is a drinkable flavor, but it feels like a bit of a stretch to expect that this will sell well against the more recognizable flavors that are already in the lineup.Reviewed on: 1/22/2009

Coffee

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 15oz can
BevNET Review: The "plain" flavor of the new Starbucks Doubleshot Energy lineup, Coffee is your classic combination of coffee, milk, and sugar flavors with added guarana, ginseng, and vitamins. From a positioning point of view, this is an opportunistic move that they probably should have done a while ago. Inside the can, there's a decent coffee flavor, with a moderate amount of milky flavor to it. The guarana, ginseng, and vitamins don't impact the flavor, but the use of sucralose does leave a trace aftertaste. However, it seems to have helped with the calorie count, which clocks in at 220 per 15 oz can -- so we'll deal with the aftertaste. Packaging is, like most Pepsi products, busy with text to the point where it makes the can hard to read. Still, it's the Starbucks brand and the word "energy" that will make this product sell -- at least for a little while.Reviewed on: 6/5/2008

Mocha

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 15 oz can
BevNET Review: The addition of mocha flavor to the Doubleshot Energy line, especially since the mocha helps offset some of the sucralose aftertaste that we cited in the Coffee review. Otherwise, the flavor is just what you'd expect from a Starbucks drink, including a notes of coffee, milk, and sugar. The addition of "energy" is nice, but adding straight up caffeine would probably be more marketable than guarana (which has natural caffeine), ginseng, and vitamins. Otherwise, we like the flavor, the packaging is decent, and the concept is a logical evolution for the brand.Reviewed on: 6/5/2008

Vanilla

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 15 oz can
BevNET Review: The Vanilla flavor of Starbucks Doubleshot Energy + Coffee was quite pleasing, with the least amount of sweetener aftertaste of the three flavors. Otherwise, the formulation is identical to the others, delivering a smooth but sweet coffee and milk combination with the addition of "energy" ingredients. Like the other flavors, the packaging is good, but a bit too text heavy. Overall, a decent entry, but it's not overly innovative when competitors such as Monster and Rockstar have already been at this category for a while.Reviewed on: 6/5/2008
