Botanic Tonics: Honoring Vanuatu’s Kava Traditions and Supporting Local Farmers

At Botanic Tonics, we have a deep respect for the rich history and traditions surrounding kava, particularly in the island nation of Vanuatu. As the U.S. kava market continues to grow, we craft our premium feel free tonics through the ethical sourcing of kava directly from local farmers in Vanuatu. By doing so, we not only ensure the highest quality of our product but also support the livelihoods of those who have been cultivating this sacred plant for generations.

What is Kava?

Kava, or piper methysticum, is a plant native to the South Pacific. The root of the plant is used as an herbal remedy with various effects. Traditionally, kava root is ground into an herbal solution paste and added to liquid for consumption as a drink. It’s often used in ceremonies and rituals for its relaxation properties, potential to increase sociability, and mood elevation. According to the report published by Virtue Market Research in 2023, the Global Kava Root Extract Market was valued at $1.26 Billion, and is projected to reach a market size of $1.75 Billion by 2030. Of that, nearly half of that market is in North America.

Kava has experienced a surge in popularity in the United States in recent years, driven by a growing interest in natural remedies and alternative wellness products. The market for kava in the US has exploded, with sales increasing by over 200% between 2018 and 2022, according to a report by the American Botanical Council. This growth can be attributed to several factors, including the increasing awareness of kava’s potential benefits. The COVID-19 pandemic has also played a role in boosting kava sales, as more people sought out natural ways to cope with the stress and uncertainty of the times. In 2021, the US imported over $10 million worth of kava, making it one of the largest importers of the crop globally. As the demand for kava continues to rise, it is expected that the US market will remain a significant driver of growth for this emerging industry.

As interest in kava has grown, the understanding and science of kava is also expanding. The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) has released an updated entry for kava via the online Botanical Safety Handbook, 2nd ed. The revision process added over 45 new literature references to the kava entry. These references provide recent scientific information related to the following pharmacological interactions with metabolism of drugs or supplements, other pharmacological studies of bioavailability and enzyme inhibition, and analysis of adverse events and case reports.

In addition, a new Food Use section is established in the entry, noting kava’s history of traditional use as a beverage. The Editors’ Notes section is expanded to provide context for the distinct phytochemical profiles between traditional (water-extracted) and contemporary extraction processes using organic solvents. The Standard Dose section is also updated to recognize these different forms of kava.

Vanuatu: The Heart of Kava Tradition

Vanuatu, an archipelago in the South Pacific, is renowned for its long-standing kava traditions. For centuries, kava has played a central role in the island’s ceremonies, rituals, and social gatherings. The knowledge and skills required to cultivate and prepare kava have been passed down through generations of Vanuatuan farmers. At Botanic Tonics, we recognize the importance of preserving and honoring these traditions, which is why we have chosen to source our kava directly from Vanuatu.

Known as “green gold,” kava is carefully cultivated by micro farmers throughout the archipelago. Kava is grown in small, sustainable plots, where farmers meticulously tend to each plant, ensuring optimal growth and quality. The care and attention given to these crops are evident in the final product, which is highly sought after for its relaxing properties.

Once harvested, the kava roots are dried and processed into a fine powder or liquid form, ready for export. Despite the small scale of these micro farms, kava has become a significant contributor to Vanuatu’s economy, with exports valued at millions of dollars annually. As demand for this unique crop continues to grow, so too does the potential for Vanuatu’s micro farmers to thrive in the global marketplace.

Supporting Local Farmers, Empowering Communities

Kava farming in Vanuatu is not a large commercial operation. The nation boasts tens of thousands of individual farmers. Many of these farms are small in acreage and are run by families that rely on the crop as their primary source of income. Through our ethical sourcing practices, we aim to empower these farmers, their families, and their communities, ensuring they receive fair compensation for their hard work and dedication to producing high-quality kava.
