With PowerCoco positioning itself as an alternative to sports drinks, we decided to start by taking a look at Tangerine, which is a flavor that drinks very much like a sports drink. The product, which uses a blend of sugar and stevia for its sweetener blend, is a pleasant tasting product that tastes like an “orange” sports drink mixed with coconut water (which appears to be what they are going for). It has a light salty note to it (they’ve added salt to the mix) and a moderate level of sweetness. There is a very slight sweetener aftertaste from the stevia, but otherwise the product is smooth and clean. All in all, what’s inside the bottle is rather enjoyable and something that is definitely thirst quenching. On the outside, PowerCoco has a slim 16 oz PET bottle that is fully wrapped. Visually, the product feels like something that fits into sports more than coconut water, thanks to its dark looking design and vertical text. We’d say the same for the name, which, with the word “power,” gives a nod to performance and feels slightly technical in nature. However, there is a nice subtle reference to a palm tree behind the brand name which is a nice contrast to the rest of the label. Overall it looks as if Power Coco is attempting to target a more mainstream audience than traditional coconut water brands and this seems like a pretty good effort.
