Whey Coco Partners with L.A. Libations, Set to Launch in Kroger in 2014

Last week, Whey Coco, which markets a powdered blend of whey protein and coconut water, announced a new broker agreement with SoCal-based beverage incubator L.A. Libations. The deal has been in the making since June and recently produced a major retail placement for the brand: Whey Coco will gain shelf space in select Kroger stores in the Northeast beginning in March 2014 with plans for a national launch later in the year.

Buffalo Wild Wings, Inc. (BWW) announced Thursday that PepsiCo, Inc., will become the restaurant’s primary soft drink and non-carbonated beverage supplier. In an effort to streamline operations and expedite its refranchising to independent bottlers, The Coca-Cola, Co., Inc. announced late Thursday that it will divide its North American operations into two units. On January 1, 2014, Coca-Cola Americas will no longer exist, paving the way for Coca-Cola North America (CCNA) and Coca-Cola Refreshments (CCR).

EU Aspartame Ruling: Praise, Fury and Forecasts

On Tuesday, the food safety body of the European Union released its long-awaited report on aspartame, concluding that that artificial sweetener is safe for humans consume at the current levels that it is used in food and beverages. As expected, the European Food Safety Authority's opinion was praised by the American Beverage Association and infuriated some consumer watchdog groups. But will the decision have an affect declining sales of aspartame-sweetened drinks?

BevNET Live Day One: The Capricious Industry

The idea that a beverage company can spike or sink at any time carried over at the conference, indicating that entrepreneurs recognize the often uncontrollable factors at play. A Colorful Array

Transparency, literal and figurative, is always good for a product. A pink lemonade should dress the part. As such, whenever possible, you should banner the brand to help the consumer make the connection. The reds, blues, greens and other colors of the spectrum helped to give Jones Soda and dozens of other companies their signature. They were all fun, and added to the drinking experience. That holds true today.

Spotlight Category: PET Still Water

It’s easy to disrespect the Coke purchase of Glaceau, but taken together, the company brands have sold $1.3 billion in IRI-tracked channels in the past year; that puts the whole Coke water system at $2.2 billion, well ahead of PepsiCo. Smartwater has nearly eclipsed Vitaminwater, it’s true – but that gives the red system a premium-priced alternative to Dasani and a brand architecture that many brands would only dream of.

Kombucha Bubbles Toward the Mainstream

The segment certainly is becoming tantalizingly visible even to the beverage conglomerates. Some of the investment in Health-Ade, after all, came from the Coca-Cola Co. via its stake in the First Beverage fund; also, there have long been rumblings that kombucha-like probiotic brand KeVita has dallied with PepsiCo’s incubation arm in Southern California.

Consumer Health Group: HFCS is “The New Trans Fat”

Nearly a month after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a preliminary determination that partially hydrogenated oils, the major dietary source of trans fat in processed foods, are no longer GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe), a prominent consumer advocacy group is calling for an end to the use of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
