Jiro’s Lessons

A few weeks ago I had the unexpected pleasure of catching a preview of a new documentary called Jiro Dreams of Sushi. I don’t write much about non-liquid forms of nutrition these days, and I’m not particularly a sushi fan either. But the film proved to be a moving experience in ways that I think are relevant to beverages, particularly the innovation space.

BevNET TV: Mamma Chia at Expo West 2012

It’s been a quite a successful run for Mamma Chia during its first year and a half. The first to market chia drink went national with UNFI only eight months after its initial launch and quickly established a solid footing in major natural retailers including Whole Foods, Sprouts and Wegmans. With a deep and wide presence within the natural channel - and chia on the verge of mainstream acceptance - Mamma Chia is setting its sights on crossover into hybrid and conventional grocery stores in 2012.

A Few Doubles Will Do

This is the time of year that, as the “Boys of Summer” return to Florida for Spring Training, I get to think about my favorite things: the Yankees, and my annual baseball analogy column. I just love the chance to compare the comings and goings of the sport I love to the action in the business I love. This year, I’m going to play the grizzled vet, dispensing lore and wisdom to a group of eager rookies wondering how they’ll break into the lineup.

ReCap: 5 Questions on 989 On Demand

Taking its first crack at the ever-expanding health and wellness market, H2M Beverages recently introduced 989 On Demand, a new cap-activated enhanced water. The product boasts an innovative and proprietary twist cap that contains a reservoir of liquid ingredients, a key point of differentiation from competitors like Activate and Karma, whose caps contain a powder-based mix.

Exclusive’s Steve Gress: Life after Vita Coco

Steve Gress has a message: Don’t count him out yet. Gress, the owner of distributor Exclusive Beverages, acknowledges his business has taken some shots in the past year, including the departure of key staff and one especially prominent brand, Vita Coco, but he said he’s getting back to the basics, taking on a suite of newer entrepreneurial brands while adding a few others that have struggled to find their way in New York.

Diving Back In: Beverage Veterans Innovate in the Water Category

In recent months, several veterans of the beverage industry have resurfaced in the water category. It’s a surprising twist because just three years ago that category itself was in the midst of a downward spiral, one brought on by a race to the bottom on pricing and a backlash over the environmental impact of its product containers.

BevNET TV: Harmless Harvest at Expo West 2012

By any account, Harmless Harvest was one of the most talked about brands at Expo West 2012, and it certainly wasn’t for a lack of influential enthusiasts. From Gwyneth Paltrow’s recent declaration that she is “obsessed” with Harmless Harvest and that “it puts all other coconut water to shame,” to a feature story in Vogue that called the beverage one of “the new health kicks of the season,” the brand has – intentionally or not - cultivated a well-heeled (or at least high-heeled) following.

Evolution Fresh Opens a Storefront

Just four months after picking up super-squeezer Jimmy Rosenberg’s high-pressure pasteurization juice company Evolution Fresh, Starbucks made good on its promise to move it into a fresh-juice retail concept.…

The Explosion of Class Action Litigation

During the last eighteen to twenty four months, the beverage industry has seen an onslaught of litigation in a particularly scary form of litigation – class actions. These cases are particularly frightening for companies because enterprising plaintiffs’ lawyers are able to initiate a case, ostensibly for the good of numerous wronged consumers, with the sign-off of only a handful of people that are willing to lend their names to the lawsuit.

Red Bull Co-Founder Chaleo Yoovidhya Is Dead

Chaleo Yoovidhya, the co-creator of Red Bull who rose from impoverished beginnings to become one of the founders of the global energy drink market, died on Saturday. The self-made Thai billionaire passed away in Bangkok and was believed to be in his 80s. Chaleo’s death was first reported by Thailand’s state broadcasting service MCOT, which cited the Thai Beverage Industry Association.

A Beautiful Mind: Brain Twist’s Larry T is Back

Larry Trachtenbroit is nearly two decades into a career in the beverage industry that has brought him cash from Coke – twice – and the respect of his peers. He’s demonstrated a near-legendary ability to produce wildly innovative products on a regular basis. But, while his talent as an innovator has translated into a long and profitable career, his products have struggled to find solid footing in the market.

Snooki – Yes, Snooki – Launches a Wild Cherry Soda

Even if we could make this stuff up, we wouldn’t… Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, the oft-mocked and ever-tanned star of MTV’s “Jersey Shore,” has launched her own soda. Yup. You read that right. In collaboration with Rocket Fizz, a chain of franchise-owned soda and candy shops, Polizzi introduced Snooki Wild Cherry Soda, a cherry-flavored drink made with cane sugar as well as natural flavors and – much like her spray-on orange tan – artificial colors.

The Suits Don’t Match

It’s hard to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s even harder to have to ask people to react to bad news on the record. Still, that’s just what we’ve had to do a lot of lately here at BevNET, as we’ve been forced to write a series of stories on beverage companies that are being sued over alleged violations of a set of California consumer protection laws covering truth in advertising and unfair competition.

Suppliers Show Off at Engredea, Nutracon

Feeding off the energy surrounding Expo West, Nutracon and Engredea posted record attendance last week in Anaheim. Engredea is the trade show section for supplier companies at Expo West, while Nutracon is the conference event for supplier companies that occurs during the two days before the trade show. Nutracon and Engredea drew over 220 exhibitors and 7,500 attendees.
