COLD SPRING HARBOR, N.Y. — In the aftermath of the devastating chemical spill in West Virginia’s Elk River, Icebox Water™ (www.icebox-water.com) has teamed up with United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) to donate a sizeable amount of Icebox Water’s™ premium spring water to residents of Charleston, West Virginia. Icebox Water™ is sustainably sourced spring water packaged in an eco-friendly, BPA free carton. The company itself is passionate about reducing the industry’s carbon footprint by providing consumers with clean, healthy water that minimizes contamination and pollution. Icebox Water™ quickly jumped into action to support communities critically affected by the spill in the Elk River.
The chemical spill, which seeped into the Elk River from West Virginia’s Freedom Industries Inc. on January 9, 2014, has left hundreds of thousands straining to perform daily necessities (such as cooking, drinking, bathing, cleaning, and more) due to serious concerns for the safety of the area’s tap water¹. Although the community’s ban on using tap water for more than flushing toilets has been lifted, state officials are still uncertain about the level of contamination in the water, and have suggested that pregnant women should use alternative water sources until the level of contamination is understood. Many citizens are still concerned for themselves and their families when using and consuming the water.
Icebox™ joined together with UNFI to deliver product to the Healthy Life Market in Charleston, West Virginia in order to address the great need for clean water in the area. “This is a great gift that Icebox™ is providing, and we will do our best to serve this water to our people,” shares Sherrie Burdette of Healthy Life Market. “This has been a very frightening experience, and although the powers that be are trying to clean up and figure out just how serious our problem is with the water, no one feels safe to drink it– especially our elderly and children.” Icebox Water™ is grateful for the opportunity to serve clean water to the people of Charleston through UNFI and Healthy Life Market (www.healthylifemarket.com/).
