SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.-- Daftmill Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is excited to unveil a first for the U.S. – Daftmill 2010 Cask Strength (58.7% ABV; 700ml; $324.99 SRP) – the newest limited edition vintage release from the family-owned and -operated seasonal Lowland Distillery. This sumptuous vatting from the unique distillery was produced using 15 first-fill ex-bourbon casks that yielded 2,400 bottles, which will become available in the U.S. beginning this month.
Located in Fife on the East coast of Scotland, Daftmill is a true farm distillery, which led the Lowland Malt revival. At the time, the country’s only Single Estate Farm Distillery, there are now 20 Lowland distilleries in production or being built. Producing just 100 casks per year from 100 percent single estate barley according to a seasonal schedule – two months in the summer and two months in winter.
The distillery is run by brothers Francis and Ian Cuthbert, whose family has owned the land since the 1980s and were tenant farms for many years prior. Distillation began in 2005 but their first whisky wasn’t released until 2018 after maturing for 12 years. For their first Cask Strength expression available in the United States, they produced a 12-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch aged in a selection of 15 first-fill ex-bourbon casks that were distilled between January and July 2010.
The resulting tasting notes are:
Nose: Lashings of vanilla essence and spiced custard, evolving over time into honeyed beeswax, sweet lemon candy, apricot jam, and hints of fresh cake dough
Palate: Spicy oak balanced with fruitier distillate notes, giving way to caramelized brown sugar, toffee and hints of mashed banana and marzipan
Finish: Dominant notes of wood spice with waves of warming cinnamon and dried ginger
Leading artisanal spirits importer, Hotaling & Co., is thrilled to make this special release available in the U.S. “Daftmill is renowned for its dedication to authenticity and craft as a true Scottish farm-to-bottle single malt,” says Dan Leese, Hotaling & Co CEO. “We pride ourselves on bringing exceptional spirits from around the world to American consumers, and this new cask strength expression from Daftmill will be sure to appeal to every whisky collector.”
About Daftmill Distillery
Situated in the Howe of Fife near Cupar in Fife. Daftmill led the revival in Lowland Malt distilleries from only 2 active ones when it started to over 20 in production or being built now. The distillery began production in 2005 at the very start of the new wave of distilleries. The business is completely family owned and operated by Francis and Ian Cuthbert whose family has farmed the land since the early 1900s. What makes Daftmill unique is the traditional nature of the production schedule - Daftmill is a true farm distillery. All the barley used for production is farmed by Francis Cuthbert on the farm. The whisky is all distilled by Francis in the farm’s off-season; two months in summer and three months in winter – this is a very traditional way of running a distillery that hasn’t been seen in Scotland since the 1800s. Daftmill is also one of Scotland’s smallest distilleries by output, distilling only 20,000 LPA or about 100 casks per year. Daftmill is the only distillery in Scotland that could use the tag ‘Single Estate Farm Distillery’.
