Barrel Global™ Partners with El Mexicano Distillery to Offer Añejo and Extra Añejo Tequila Barrels
As Global Tequila Demand Soars, Barrel Ownership Company Moves into Fastest-Growing Spirits Category in Collaboration with Additive-Free Tequila Brand
Iowa & Jalisco, Mexico (September 25, 2024) – As tequila continues to dominate shelf space while commanding attention from sophisticated and curious cocktail enthusiasts around the world, US-based barrel ownership company Barrel Global today announced its expansion into the fastest-growing spirits category by partnering with El Mexicano Tequila to offer highly-coveted añejo and extra añejo private barrels. Through this partnership, beginning immediately, Barrel Global will offer a limited-edition collection of 200-liter barrels filled with 100% Blue Weber Agave Tequila for purchase through its online portal. Price available upon request.
Barrel Global allows tequila enthusiasts with a bit of patience to purchase a new make spirit at a lower price point, oversee its maturation and bottle design, and then bring it to market or resell the barrel. Crafted to be aged into añejo and extra añejo, these tequila barrels are set to become collectibles – offering an exemplary spirit from one of the great Jalisco distilleries. Housed in ex-bourbon barrels, the tequila inside is of the finest quality. The 100% Blue Weber Agave Tequila is 48% ABV and has a minimum aging requirement of one year for añejo and three years for extra añejo.
“Due to the incredible popularity of Mexican spirits, it made sense that our business model evolved from solely offering whiskey barrels to also offering beautifully aged añejo and extra añejo tequila,” said Barrel Global founder George Koutsakis. “We believe there is a robust market for private barrel offerings of the highest-quality, additive free tequila, which is coming from one of the most notable distilleries in Jalisco – El Mexicano,” Koutsakis continued.
Based in the mountainous region of Jalisco and headed up by a third-generation tequila master, El Mexicano is renowned for high-quality production of artisanal, additive free tequilas, ensuring that the true flavor of agave shines through in every sip. Voted as one of the top 10 tequilas in the world by 300,000 users and 12,000 blind tasters on Tequila Matchmaker, El Mexicano takes immense pride in using traditional methods for cooking and processing the agave. As a special, unique touch, the distillery plays classical music non-stop for the barrels to achieve uniformity, where the yeast strain works naturally for more than five days without speeding up its process.
How Barrel Global Works:
Through its online portal, consumers schedule an intake call with a representative from the company’s experts to request a barrel reservation. Like other private barrel programs, consumers may request samples from various barrels and distilleries to truly personalize their selection. Upon payment, legal certification is issued to the buyer conveying full barrel rights to the purchaser. During the maturation process, barrels are stored in a secure warehouse in Jalisco at the El Mexicano distillery at an annual cost of $100 per year, per barrel.
Owning a barrel puts the consumer in complete control of when it’s reached peak maturation – however, Barrel Global adheres to a one-year minimum aging to meet añejo requirements and three years to meet extra añejo requirements. Along the way, owners may schedule visits to the distillery or warehouse to check on their barrel – and pull samples to check on its taste profile and color.
At the bottling stage, Barrel Global facilitates the design, packaging, and legally compliant shipping of bottles. To retain the Denomination of Origin for Tequila, the barrels are bottled in Mexico and exported to the U.S. Barrel Global further customizes the experience by allowing consumers to create personalized labels. For buyers looking to sell bottles commercially, Barrel Global helps with obtaining a COLA (certification/exemption of label/bottle approval) and complying with the three-tier system – both legal requirements of buying and selling spirits in the US market. Additionally, at any point of barrel ownership, the customer may resell the barrel to another interested party.
Later this year, Barrel Global founder George Koutsakis will roll out a new companion service to Barrel Global called InBarrel, allowing consumers to customize and personalize their very own bespoke brand of tequila.
