New York, NY – Skurnik Wines & Spirits, a leading U.S. importer and distributor known
for representing some of the world’s finest producers of wines, spirits, and sake, is proud to announce its new
partnership with Hana Makgeolli, a trailblazing producer of traditional Korean-style rice wine in the United
States. Beginning September 1, 2025, Skurnik will distribute Hana Makgeolli’s artisanal sool in nine key
direct-distribution markets: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Ohio,
Kentucky, Indiana, and California.
Founded in 2017 by Alice Jun and business partner John Limb, Hana Makgeolli was created to revive and elevate traditional Korean rice wine—known as makgeolli or takju—using time-honored methods and pristine ingredients. Based in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood, the brewery handcrafts its sool, a diverse category of traditional Korean alcoholic beverages, through natural fermentation. They use no-spray organic rice, filtered New York water, and nuruk, a traditional Korean fermentation starter made from wheat and barley.
“We are excited to welcome Hana Makgeolli to our portfolio,” said David Skurnik, Executive Vice President of Skurnik Wines & Spirits. “Alice’s dedication to authenticity, craft, and sustainability resonates with our values and fits very well into our portfolio of great wines, spirits, and sake. Hana Makgeolli represents real innovation by championing traditional Korean beverages through thoughtfulness, precision, and delicious bottles that we are proud to represent.”
Hana Makgeolli’s signature style is its dry and preservative-free style of craft takju. The brand's commitment to traditional brewing and ethical sourcing results in expressive, culturally grounded products—values that align closely with Skurnik’s mission to champion independently owned, quality-driven producers.
"Makgeolli is one of Korea’s oldest alcoholic beverages, yet it remains underrepresented outside its home country,” said Alice Jun, Founder of Hana Makgeolli. “Through this partnership with Skurnik, we’re not only expanding distribution—we’re contributing to a global movement that celebrates Korean craftsmanship, fermentation, and identity.”
