ZERO Mandarin Melon Berry

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 14 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Mandarin Melon Berry is one of the initial two flavors that makes up the Holistics Zero line. From a flavor perspective, it?s definitely enjoyable, but we prefer the Wild Black Cherry variety to this one. The pink colored liquid has melon and berry notes, but we fail to see anything that qualifies as "Mandarin." Also, the stevia and erythritol blend doesn?t work as well as it does in the Wild Black Cherry variety ? it can be tasted in the body of the drink and leaves a slight aftertaste. Still, it?s among the better tasting stevia sweetened drinks out there. Functionally, this "herbal elixir" contains a bevvy of functional ingredients, including maqui berry, valerian root, chamomile, hibiscus, basil leaf extract, lemon verbena, and white tea concentrate. Like the other variety, they don?t tell the consumer what all this stuff is for or how it?s good for you. That being said, it makes us wonder why they put any of it into the bottle? Packaging is a 14 oz. proprietary glass bottle, which does a nice job of quickly identifying itself as a zero calorie product. However, the monkey brand, naturally sweetened, and functional aspirations of the product seem to be out of synch with each other. Overall, the flavor is very enjoyable, but clarifying the product?s branding and positioning would help it. Reviewed on: 5/17/2011

ZERO Wild Black Cherry

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 14 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Of the two initial flavors that make up Adina?s "Holistics Zero" line, Wild Black Cherry is our preferred flavor. It features a very pleasant tasting black cherry flavor, which they?ve sweetened with erythritol and stevia. With a very natural sweetness and minimal aftertaste, it?s definitely one of the best tasting stevia drinks that?s currently out there. Another thing that?s enjoyable about the product is its light mouth feel, which, given the dark red color, was somewhat of a surprise. Beyond having enjoyable flavor, Adina appears to be trying to do a lot with this product. At least that was our impression after reading the copy on the bottle and the ingredient list. There?s a lot of stuff in this product, including resveratrol, chamomile, valerian root, hibiscus, basil leaf and a host of other functional ingredients. Aside from describing the product as an "herbal elixir," there?s no mention of what this product is going for. The question is, are they attempting to be responsible by not making a ton of functional claims or did they just forget to connect the dots? On the packaging front, the 14 oz. proprietary bottle is unique and easy to spot as a zero calorie product ("zero" is in big block letters). The monkey theme is a playful mascot, but it seems slightly out of place for a stevia sweetened herbal elixir. Overall, we love the flavor and are confident that people who try it will like the taste, but we feel like they could do more with the branding (perhaps being more forward about the taste of the drink) to help it pull better from the shelf.Reviewed on: 5/17/2011

Grapefruit Goji

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 14 oz bottle
BevNET Review: Grapefruit Goji is the other new flavor addition to the Adina Holistics lineup. Inside the bottle, there’s a mellow (and pleasant) grapefruit flavor that makes up the majority of the flavor and they’ve backed it with a mild amount of sweetness. We didn’t taste anything that was obviously goji flavoring (perhaps the slightly sour note?), but there are enjoyable herbal and tea notes to the flavor. This helps give the product some depth and originality, making what’s otherwise a juice drink into a cocktail that targets refreshment and health & wellness. And in this day and age where consumers want something more from what they eat and drink, Adina has hit the nail on the head by finding the right balance between the two. The same can be said for the packaging, which, thanks to the use of the name Holistics and its visual treatment, has a credible healthy vibe while also speaking to the consumers sense of curiosity and fun (unless you have something against monkeys). Overall, this is one of the better flavors of the brand – and definitely one of the more memorable flavors. Reviewed on: 8/4/2009

Pomegranate Acai

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 14 oz bottle
BevNET Review: Adina Holistics’ Pomegranate Acai flavor is a smart and opportunistic addition to the line. Fortunately, it’s also a pretty drinkable product, with a mild berry flavor that also features a slight herbal note to the finish. It’s lightly sweetened, having only 21g of sugar and 90 calories per 14 oz. bottle. The product does have pomegranate juice and clarified acai extract, but we only taste the pomegranate – and it’s very light at that. Still, what they have concocted is quite pleasant, especially with the drink’s light level of sweetness. On the herbal front, the product has ginseng, gotu kola, astragalus, white tea, tusli leaf extract, and eleuthero root extract, all of which have been added under the loose tagline of “enlightened ayurvedic herbals.” Rather than promoting a specific function, it’s just about being “holistic” and healthy. That’s fine by us – especially since it tastes quite good. The packaging, which is a 14 oz. proprietary bottle, has a hip but wholesome vibe to it. It’s a well polished design that, due to the use of a random monkey character, has a bit of personality to it. Overall, we like this new flavor both in terms of what’s actually inside of the bottle and its likely appeal due to the use of popular superfruit flavors. Reviewed on: 8/4/2009

Honey Eucalyptus

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 16 oz glass
BevNET Review: While we can’t tell you if there’s Eucalyptus flavor in this (or what the benefit of that would be), this is a tasty drink that’s filling the gap between low calorie teas and high calorie juices. With 90 calories per 14 oz. bottle, this product has a pleasant flavor that’s built on a light base of honey (and evaporated cane juice), sweetened green tea, and a cool herbal finish. As far as the “Holistics” component of the drink goes, there are several herbal ingredients, including eleuthero root extract, ashgwandha root extract, astragalus root extract, ginseng extract, and reishi mushroom extract. All of this is added for the general purpose of “harmony and wellness” which, compared to other marketers who make liberal use of the supposed functions of herbs, seems a bit more believable, in a low-to-no expectations sense, if nothing else. Packaging has a lot of character and attitude to it, with a funky looking monkey image on what is otherwise an earthy looking design. The front panel is clean and nicely arranged, with the eye able to quickly and easily digest the look. Overall, a very enjoyable product.Reviewed on: 6/2/2009

Mango Orange Chamomile

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 16 oz glass
BevNET Review: The mixture of mango and orange is one of those classic juice drink combinations – and we’re happy to see a modernized version of it that can hold its own. In this case, you’ve got a nicely balanced blend of tropical and citrus fruit flavors with a splash of white tea in there for good measure. It finishes with a lemony note, thanks to the use of lemongrass, lemon balm, and, of course, natural flavor. With 90 calories per 14 oz. bottle, the product seems reasonably portioned and sweetened to appeal to that consumer who likes juice drinks, but not all the calories that come with them. As a juice drink replacement, the flavor of Mango Orange Chamomile is definitely sufficient and it’s even better when you throw in some herbal ingredients (hence “Holistics”), USDA Organic certification, vitamins, and the funky but wholesome “monkey” theme. Overall, a very enjoyable product that blends pleasant fruit flavors, herbal ingredients, and cool brand design. Reviewed on: 6/2/2009

Peach Amalaki

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 16 oz glass
BevNET Review: Of the lineup, this is the only flavor to use an ayurvedic herb as part of its name (Ayurveda is a traditional Indian system of medicine). Flavor wise, it’s not too far from the rest of the line, using a mild fruit-flavored base that would taste watered down if it were any lighter. There’s a decent peach flavor (from flavoring, not juice) that has tea notes from the added green tea. Otherwise, there’s certainly a note of something that we’d describe as “herbal”, but they aren’t flavors that we could identify (there’s added amalaki, Echinacea, tulsi, turmeric, basil, hibiscus, and nettle extracts). That’s fine by us. While the drink is called “Holistics,” it’s clearly aimed at the mainstream, so having a mild regimen of herbal ingredients and tea paired with enjoyable flavor seems like a good bet. Same goes for the outside, which uses a proprietary bottle and a label that’s been given a monkey theme. It’s certainly reminiscent of a certain Adina executive’s former life with a Lizard-themed brand – but with a modern, organically skewed vibe. However, we’re not convinced that the name “Amalaki” is going to help sell this flavor. Either it will confuse consumers – or simply become known as “Peach.” In any event, this is another enjoyable product from Adina Holistics.Reviewed on: 6/2/2009

Honey Lemon Aloe

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 16 oz glass
BevNET Review: The second honey flavored drink in the lineup is this one, Honey Lemon Aloe. This variety also uses green tea as its base, which has been sweetened with sugar and honey. It’s light, with just the right amount of sweetness and a splash of lemon, with a touch of green tea flavor in between. However, there’s no aloe in the drink -- so why is it in the tile? This might confuse the label-reading consumer. We're also left wondering whether or not this lineup needs two “honey” flavors? While this one isn't bad, we’re more partial to the Honey Eucalyptus variety. The “herbal blend” in this variety includes honey, green tea, lemon peel, tulsi leaf, and lemongrass. Packaging is on par with the other flavors, but again, this flavor looks extremely similar to the Honey Eucalyptus variety. Overall, we enjoyed Honey Lemon Aloe, but we’d enjoy it a lot more if there wasn’t another flavor that was so similar. Reviewed on: 6/2/2009

Blackberry Hibiscus

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 16 oz. glass
BevNET Review: This was one of our favorite flavors of the Adina Holistics brand. Pairing blackberry flavor (with elderberry and grape juice) and hibiscus makes for an extremely refreshing flavor. They’ve used both of these flavors and the added sweetener very sparingly, resulting in a flavor profile that’s subtle but complex enough to satisfy adult palates. Herbal ingredients include ginseng, gotu kola, astragalus, white tea, tulsi leaf, and eleuthero root, which have been added for the loose functional benefit of helping to “restore balance, harmony, and wellness.” Leaving that interpretation up to the consumer is fine, especially since that essentially eliminates the likelihood of a consumer leaving the brand due to functional benefits that don’t work. Plus, they’ve done a great job of creating an attractive, polished looking design that carries from the cap, to the custom molded bottle, and finally on to the label. The label is clean and easy to digest by the eye, while the monkey adds a touch of personality (albeit unexplained personality). Overall, a great product from start to finish.Reviewed on: 6/2/2009
