Manufacturer's Brand Overview: [Edit]
Virgil's So Good You'll Swear It's Made in Heaven What Makes Us Different? Think of Virgil's as a gourmet root beer. We're what Ben and Jerry's is to ice cream, what Dom Perignon is to champagne. We're a micro-brewed root beer made with all-natural ingredients. We use herbs imported from around the world and unbleached pure cane sugar. How good are we? So good we won the International Fancy Food and Confection Show's "Outstanding Beverage" award in 1994, 1996, and 1997! This show is attended by many of the world's best restaurants and hotels. We also won the "American Taste Award For Excellence In Root Beer". Would Coca Cola's Fanta, Pepsico's Barq's or A&W compete? Not on your life - They wouldn't stand a chance! Virgil's ingredients are collected worldwide and gathered together at our facilities in the USA. From there they are imported to our brewer in the United States. At the brewery, the ingredients are then combined and brewed and finally flash pasteurized to insure the purest quality. Some root beers claim to be "cold-brewed". This is merely another term for the filtering process that yields common soda. Even so-called premium root beers like Stewarts, IBC and Weinhard's are not hand crafted brews like VIRGIL'S. Virgil's Root Beer, Cream Soda, Black Cherry Cream Soda and Real Cola all now available in Diet! All Diet Virgil's are sweetened with Stevia and Xylitol. Only Virgil's Microbrewed Root Beer is truly "brewed."

Dr. Better

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Virgil’s take on Dr Pepper is this product, “Dr. Better.” So how exactly is it better? Looking at the bottle, the fact that it is 100 percent natural and has no preservatives or caffeine seem to be the key differentiators. Plus, it comes in a 12 oz. glass bottle, which, at least for some soda consumers, is another benefit. In terms of flavor, it tastes almost identical to Dr Pepper (aside from its lack of caffeine). We probably wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference between the two if tasting them side by side. If that’s what they were going for, then they’ve certainly succeeded. Packaging, on the other hand, seems somewhat disconnected from what’s inside the bottle. They’ve kept the same graphic that’s found on all of Virgil’s product (a man serving frosty root beer mugs to his children). Seeing as Dr Pepper does not go as far back as root beer, the graphic doesn’t exactly exude confidence in the product. And if we’re picking nits, there’s something that seems conflicted about having your NASDAQ symbol on the side of a bottle touting its microbrew formulation. Overall, this is definitely one of the better tasting Dr Pepper style CSDs out there, but we think they should have done more with the branding than just throw it in the Virgil’s line.

ZERO Dr. Better

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Diet; Container: 12 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Compared with the sugar sweetened version of Dr. Better that’s also available, Zero Dr. Better is simply not as good. Using stevia as its sweetener, there’s a heavy note of that stevia flavor in the mix that lingers on for a while. It also overpowers a good deal of the drink’s flavor, which makes this product not so enjoyable to consume (it’s definitely not as good as Diet Dr Pepper – although it is all-natural). Unlike the regular Dr. Better, this variety has caffeine, which should add some appeal to certain consumers. Packaging is a 12 oz. longneck glass bottle, which, aside from having different text to denote that it’s zero calorie, has a completely different format than its counterpart (maybe they are in the middle of a label change?). While it is definitely cleaner and more visually appealing, we’re still not convinced that it should have the standard Virgil’s graphics on its label. Overall, this product doesn’t really do it for us.
