Review: 3 Water

3 Water is a product that blends spring water with electrolytes and caffeine (50mg) and enhanced to achieve a pH balance of 7+ (slightly alkaline). The result is a beverage that the manufacturer hopes will be viewed as the “perfect water.” On the surface, it looks and drinks very much like a bottle of water. And with a pleasant and smooth body, it’s definitely a serviceable one, especially when you factor in the caffeine. Despite what's inside the bottle, however, the branding and packaging are our biggest issue with this product. While calling it “3” is a clever way to point out the product’s benefits, it’s in no way something that’s going to be easy (or feasible) to own or establish as a brand. And using a 16 oz. standard looking water bottle will ultimately typecast it as a value player, which is a tough (and often deadly) spot to be with three multinational corporations all playing in that space. From our perspective, this product needs to do some rather dramatic visual differentiation and really give the consumer a reason to want to associate with this product. And truly, we’re not saying this to be mean. It is, despite being a difficult and expensive task, a reality of trying to compete in an overly commoditized category like bottled water.
