Review: Arriba Horchata

Arriba Horchata is a classic style horchata that’s made with water, reduced fat milk, sugar, natural flavors, rice flour, dipotassium phosphate, salt and carrageenan. It’s milky, sweet, and slightly viscous with a pleasant taste from the rice flour. If it’s horchata flavor that you’re after, this is certainly a pretty good option, although it’s certainly not the most high end version that we’ve ever tasted. That being said, there’s something about the flavoring of the product that could be improved, although it’s hard to really be more specific than that. Nutritionally, this is a full-calorie product at 190 calories and 38g of sugar, although, as the manufacturer points out on the can, it does have 4g of protein. However, when you look at the branding, which features a skull character, it’s clear that Arriba isn't exactly seeking a consumer who is going to be too concerned about the nutrition facts panel. Regardless, the new design is a much improved look over the original Arriba. It has a more aggressive look to it and the design is polished looking, which should definitely stand to help this out. Still, we’re not completely sure who the real buyer for this is in that it doesn’t have the functionality of Arriba's energy drink and it doesn’t seem authentic enough to attract an ethnic buyer. So, it feels as though a value price is ultimately what it’s going to take to drive this product. All in all, we like the branding upgrade, but the horchata feels as though it needs some refinement.
