Review: Gimbi Pink Grapefruit

(Last Updated: Nov 18, 2014 at 10:11 AM)
This flavor of this Bai5 Bubbles variety is essentially the company's play on the ubiquitous citrus flavor that makes its way into every carbonated soft drink line. As with its other flavors, Bai has elevated the flavor in two ways. First, the product actually contains grapefruit juice, which helps to give the product a grapefruit flavor that’s spot on. Second, Bai has nailed the sweetener blend, which consists of erythritol and stevia, such that it tastes more like a full-calorie product than one that has only five calories. But, of course, this being a Bai5 product, it also contains antioxidants from the company's proprietary blend of organic coffeefruit extract, white tea extract and vitamin C. We’ve always maintained that flavor, not functionality, will keep buyers coming back to most beverages -- and this product has done a great job of delivering on both. Taking a look at the packaging, we like Bai's choice of a slim 11.5 oz. can. The white backdrop works well, both in translating the brand from Bai's flagship product and making it look the part of a reduced-calorie product (which so often use white backgrounds). As we’ve mentioned before, we find the current naming convention, which uses either a country or foreign city name, to be a distraction (the consumer has to ask “What is Gimbi?”) rather than something that helps. Still, it’s a relatively minor one and the rest of the label is easy to read and polished. Overall, a very enjoyable addition to the Bai5 lineup.
