Review: Jamaica Blood Orange
(Last Updated: Nov 18, 2014 at 10:11 AM)With seven varieties in the Bai5 Bubbles lineup, we had a hard time figuring out which ones to focus in on. While some are better than others, none of them disappoint, especially against other zero- or similarly low-calorie products. For whatever reason, we kept coming back to this flavor, Jamaica Blood Orange, as one of the standouts of the bunch. The flavor of the product is fruity and enjoyable, which is helped by the fact that the product includes orange juice concentrate (1 percent) to help round things out. We might not call it blood orange, but it still has a more tart flavor than typical orange juice. Otherwise, the product falls somewhere between a sparkling water and a soda. It has a decent amount of sweetness, but no sugar, which is the result of the company's use of erythritol and stevia. Ultimately, we’d probably describe this product as being a modern take on a diet orange soda, both in terms of the more fruity flavor and the functional additives (you can’t just have refreshment anymore, right?). On the latter part, Bai's approach to the functionality, which hinges on antioxidants from coffeefruit extract, white tea extract and vitamin C, has been refined quite a bit since we first saw the Bai brand. It feels much more subtle, almost as if it’s an added bonus on top of what is otherwise an enjoyable tasting product in its own right. Otherwise, we very much like the design. What Bai has created is appealing to the senses and functional in terms of it being easy to read and understand. Overall, a very nice product from Bai5.
