Review: Kombucha

Easily the best of the Carpe Diem beverage line, this scarlet drink has a pleasant, easily noticeable mandarin orange flavor that plays nicely against the natural pungency of the fermented kombucha. This pungency gives it a sour smell and taste that is just barely leavened by the fructose sweetener. But somehow – except for the smell, which is just not pleasant – it works, and we wouldn’t mind drinking this out of a glass, over ice, where that aroma would be less concentrated than in PET plastic bottle’s small opening. Still, the packaging and label are elegant, which is the direct result of the time and money that was clearly spent on the proprietary bottle. We like the taste -- even though it has niche appeal -- and we think it looks good enough for a consumer to pick it up. However, we’re worried that a lot of consumers will be turned off by the aroma. Still, that's not something that will hold against Carpe Diem as this is a very well executed kombucha drink.
