NEW YORK – The MetroStars apparently are about to be infused with new energy.
According to a report in the Daily News on Tuesday, Red Bull has agreed to pay $30 million to purchase the MetroStars from the Anschutz Entertainment Group.
The newspaper said the deal could reach at least $50 million were the Austrian manufacturer of the energy drink also to acquire naming rights to the team’s new stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, which is scheduled to open by early 2008.
Were the deal to be completed, it would become the highest purchase price for an MLS team.
Sources told the paper that soccer legend Franz Beckenbauer, the head of the 2006 German World Cup Organizing Committee, has played a key role in the negotiations with AEG, which owns several MLS teams.
