This week’s reviews features a pretty clear distinction between indulgence (Dirty Mountain Dew) and function (Orange Toucan), but that doesn’t mean they both can’t be fun. To submit your beverage product to BevNET for review, click here. And to browse past reviews, check the archive here.
Orange Toucan Moringa Infused Beverages
Orange Toucan is a line of moringa-infused functional beverages available in three fruit flavors: Watermelon & Lime, Dragon Fruit & Mangosteen, and Lemon Lime & Mango. Made in Thailand, each 10.48 oz can contains more than 50% juice, 0 grams of added sugar, and just 20–35 calories (sweetened with juice and monk fruit). With 500 milligrams of moringa per can, these non-carbonated drinks aim to deliver functional benefits without compromising on refreshment. The flavor profiles are mild and balanced, offering natural sweetness with a subtle herbal note from the moringa.
Things that stand out:
- Clean, juice-forward flavors with pleasant tropical notes. There’s a subtle sweetness that feels natural and not overdone and having a no-added sugar formulation and modest calorie count are definitely pluses. While the moringa does leave a slight coating behind in your mouth, the fruit flavors help keep the enjoyment factor high.
- Impressive 500 mg of moringa adds a strong functional positioning.
Things to consider:
- The word “Orange” in the brand name could lead to confusion about flavor expectations.
- Front-of-pack call-outs for key attributes like calorie count and moringa content might help, as would a non-carbonated callout.
- Moringa has growing awareness, but it’s still niche so this brand could take some time to build.
Rating:
PepsiCo’s latest experiment, Dirty Mountain Dew, takes inspiration from the social media “dirty soda” craze. This line debuts with a Cream Soda Dew flavor, available nationally in both regular and zero-sugar varieties, packaged in 12-ounce cans. The concept aims to blend the familiar citrus kick of Mountain Dew with the smooth/rich sweetness of cream soda, resulting in a hybrid flavor that’s equal parts nostalgic and experimental.
Things that stand out:
- Flavor delivers exactly what’s promised: a mix of cream soda and classic Mountain Dew. The balance leans slightly toward the Dew side, maintaining the brand’s signature profile.
- Availability of both full-sugar and zero-sugar versions broadens appeal.
- The taste is surprisingly enjoyable compared to some of Pepsi’s other limited runs.
Things to consider:
- As with similar line extensions in the past, we don’t think this brings consumers back into Mountain Dew for the long haul.
- Packaging is visually cluttered, making it difficult to distinguish between the two versions.
- The regular variety’s 44 grams of sugar feels excessive for today’s market and the use of artificial flavors & sweeteners limits this product.
