Company Improves Score from 2022
Impact Report Highlights Progress on Sustainable Initiatives and Community Support
Altos Planos, Inc., parent company of ultra-premium agave spirits brands Mijenta Tequila and Tres Tribus Mezcal, today announced that it has been recertified as a B Corporation by B Lab, the non-profit organization that awards the recognition.
The renewed certification, which is valid for three years, means that Altos Planos has met or exceeded the rigorous B Impact assessment criteria measuring an organization’s positive social impact across categories including corporate governance, environmental impact, community, employees and customers.
The company also improved its score from its original certification in August 2022, highlighting its commitment to identifying and implementing ways to be more sustainable, launching new programs to support local communities and enhancing its policies to continue to strengthen its ability to live up to the highest standards of corporate responsibility as it grows.
“We have been focused from the beginning not only on crafting a rich and complex tequila using simple ingredients – only agave, water and yeast – but on pushing the envelope on sustainability in the spirits industry,” said Elise Som, Altos Planos Co-Founder and Director of Sustainability. “We believe recertifying as a B Corp with an improved score demonstrates the commitment of our team and our partners to creatively identifying ways to do better. This shared vision helps us to have a positive, lasting impact from the fields, to the communities that produce and enjoy our spirits, to the environment more broadly.”
To coincide with this recertification, Mijenta has also released its annual Impact Report, which details the work it has done over the past year related to sustainability and community support.
One of the most substantial improvements was the redesign of the Mijenta bottle, which reduced its carbon emissions over the product lifecycle by nearly 50% per bottle. By reducing the weight and moving to a recyclable stopper made from sugar cane-based biopolymer, the company has continued to make progress in making its packaging even more sustainable.
Through Mijenta’s longstanding partnership with Women’s Earth Alliance, the brand has supported powerful, women-led grassroots organizations focused on advancing community-based education, protecting traditional agricultural knowledge, strengthening access to markets for women in agroecology, and defending the extraordinary biodiversity that defines Mexico’s ecosystems. Through this partnership, these organizations have been able to deepen and expand their impact.
Altos Planos has also broadened its partnership with Regen Network, through which it participated beginning in early 2024 in the organization’s work with the indigenous-led jaguar biocultural credits program developed by the Achuar Nation and Sharamentsa community in Ecuador. Combining community support, environmental stewardship and protection of endangered species, the credits are unique for being backed by Regen’s blockchain technology, creating a transparent, traceable, and regenerative system.
In addition to Altos Planos’ ongoing support of the quickly growing jaguar biocultural credit program, it has also partnered with Regen to offset its greenhouse gas emissions using the same blockchain-backed system to remain fully carbon neutral. Through City Forest Credits, a national non-profit organization endorsed by the International Carbon Reduction Offset Accreditation, the company is protecting urban green areas in Richmond, VA through the Evergreen & East Preservation Project and the Mansfield, OH metro area through the Sandy Cross Forest Preservation Project. Supporting high-value projects to reforest and preserve urban green areas has the triple benefit of positively impacting the environment, human health and social equity.
