Rosaluna Mezcal Becomes First-Ever Mezcal Brand to Earn "Distintivo Verde" Certification
The historic recognition from COMERCAM establishes Rosaluna as a sustainability pioneer in the mezcal industry.
Oaxaca, Mexico – On Saturday, August 23, 2025, Rosaluna Mezcal was officially awarded the Distintivo Verde certification by COMERCAM, becoming the first mezcal brand to achieve this recognition. The announcement was made during a special event hosted at the facilities of Juan José Méndez León, Rosaluna Master Distiller, in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca. The certification underscores Rosaluna’s leadership in environmental responsibility and sets a new benchmark for sustainability in the mezcal industry.
A Landmark Certification for Mezcal
The Distintivo Verde is a new environmental certification established by COMERCAM, the official body responsible for certifying mezcal producers and regulating compliance with quality; the goal is to highlight mezcal producers who adopt advanced sustainability standards. To qualify, producers must demonstrate measurable commitments across key areas: efficient water use that minimizes waste and promotes conservation; adoption of renewable and alternative energy sources; reduction of agrochemicals through organic cultivation methods; reuse of production residuals to reduce waste; prevention of deforestation; implementation of fair labor practices and employee wellbeing programs; and meaningful contributions to the local community.
Rosaluna’s certification reflects years of integrating sustainability into every stage of production, from organic farming, natural pest management, and regenerative practices that improve soil health, to responsible management of production byproducts and the adoption of sustainable packaging. At a time when mezcal is experiencing unprecedented global traction, this recognition is especially significant, as it validates a production model that not only safeguards tradition and quality but also ensures that the category’s rapid growth is aligned with long-term environmental and social responsibility. The Distintivo Verde was formally presented by Abelino Cohetero Villegas, President of COMERCAM, to the Rosaluna leadership team, including Master Distiller JJ Méndez León, CEO Steve McGarry, CFO Vicky Garfield and Director of Operations JC Estrada, during a special ceremony in the heart of Oaxaca. The event was also attended by Senator Luis Alfonso Silva Romo and representatives of the Government of the State of Oaxaca.
Looking Ahead
This recognition positions Rosaluna as a pioneer in the mezcal industry’s transition toward sustainable practices. As consumer demand for environmentally responsible products grows, the Distintivo Verde reinforces Rosaluna’s role as a model of how tradition, quality, and sustainability can coexist.
