September 9, 2025 – Mijenta, the award-winning, sustainably produced tequila made in the highlands of Jalisco using only agave, water and yeast, today announced the release of its second expression in the brand’s Maestra Selection series. This limited-edition bottling brings the same ambition of the inaugural Maestra Selection release into an exploration of terroir across Tequila’s Denomination of Origin.

By law, tequila can be produced in only five states in Mexico – Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacan, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. For this release, Mijenta’s Maestra Tequilera Ana María Romero wanted to explore how the incredibly diverse soil, climate, elevation and cultivation practices across Mexico impact the flavors of the agave. Shaped by each state’s unique ecosystem and traditions, Romero found that the agaves develop drastically different taste profiles.

“Mexico is a country of immense beauty, both culturally and naturally, and this tequila offered an opportunity to celebrate both of those aspects,” Romero said. “Beginning my career in wine, I’ve been fascinated by terroir, and I was amazed to see how different the taste profiles are for each state’s agaves as they are shaped by the local environmental conditions. From the caramel and spice of Guanajuato, to the citrus and red fruit of Michoacan, to the preserved fruits, herbs and almond of Nayarit, to the mint, fresh grass, sage and spices of Tamaulipas, to the herbal and citrus notes of Jalisco, this tequila is crafted to allow the unique personalities of each state to shine through in every sip.”

Sourced from single estates in each of the five territories, the agaves for this release were distilled separately and then masterfully blended to create a final profile that is rich and complex.

Bottled at 40% ABV, the final blend features aromas of caramelized coconut, vanilla, cooked agave, fruity notes such as caramelized cherry and roasted pineapple, citrus hints of fresh lemon, and spices including cinnamon, tonka pepper, nutmeg, and cardamom. These are complemented by delicate herbal tones like mint, spearmint, sage, freshly cut grass, and floral nuances such as roses.

To commemorate the release, Mexico City-based artist Sophia Castellanos created a bespoke label and box celebrating each state in the Denomination of Origin, embodied by ‘spirit animals’ representing each state’s culture and history.

Castellanos chose the coyote, the god of Sun and Fire, to represent Guanajuato, while the hummingbird, for Jalisco, embodies beauty, vitality and joy and is commonly found in art and symbolism across the region. Michoacan’s butterfly symbolizes transformation and positive change, and in the local culture, butterflies were thought to be spirits that could carry messages between worlds. In Nayarit, the deer represents fertility and abundance, and is the animal that leads shamans through their spiritual journey. For Tamaulipas, Tenek, a half-fish, half-crocodile god, embodies the myth that when the gods divided the fish, heaven and earth were created.

The unique five-sided bottle also pays homage to the five states from which the agaves for the expression were sourced.

Priced at $74.99 (750ml), the limited bottling of Mijenta’s Maestra Selection No. 2 will be available to order in the U.S. from September 8, 2025 on Mijenta's website as well as select local retailers. For more information, please find the brand on Instagram and Facebook at @mijentatequila.
