Coca-Cola may soon come in an aluminum bottle was well as the traditional aluminum pop-top.

CNN Money reports that the consumer soft drink giant is test marketing 250 ml (about 8.5 oz) aluminum contour bottles at night clubs and select events. Currently, the bottles come in red, silver and black for Coke, Diet Coke and Coke Zero.

A Coke spokesman told CNN that the success of the pilot program would be one factor that determined if Coke expanded the packaging scheme to the broader consumer base.

The spokesman did not say what other factors may influence that decision.

Went to buy some but they cost $3 each!!!!! That's retarded that they'd cost $3 each. I know it doesn't cost that much to make. Geez give me a break. You can buy a 12 pack of coke for that. It really pisses me off how these soda companies try to rip off everyone now. They must have been me for collector purposes only like the Mt. Dew cans which are $2 each! Come on. I haven't priced beer in the aluminum can like these yet because I keep forgetting too but then again beer cost a lot anyway. I think it would be neat if they could do this for the same price as a 12 pack of cans but they overcharge for "convience" and then wonder why they're losing money. It's called no one feels like paying for convience but for a quality product. $1 for a 2 liter, $1.50 and up for a 20 oz. Sorry to rant, this is just one of my pet peeves...soda companies screwing us.

I am holding one right now, and felt the need to find a place to voice my opinion. The bottle only holds 8.5 FL OZ, and appears to use more aluminum to make the bottle than an ordinary 12 oz coke can. It is too rigid to crush like an ordinary aluminum can. With the whole global push toward reduction in material for the sake of recycling and carbon output, shipping, etc. this bottle feels like a step backward with regard to environmental responsibility.

Bottom line: More energy required to package smaller amount of goods.

Why?

I'd pay $3 a piece for them! Where are they being marketed?

i really hope you decide to do this nation-wide at a reasonable price and discontinue the plastic bottles altogether. aluminum is great for re-cycling - plastic is a disaster. made from petroleum and stays in landfills forever. use green ink to show how committed to the environment you are.

I think that it is a wonderful idea. Pricing will come down once production numbers allow for it so don't worry about current cost. Where are they currently available for retail purchase. I am in the Atlanta area.

I bought a bottle in Ocean City, NJ during my summer vacation. it cost $2, a bit pricey, but totally worth it. it's a good collector's item. i collect coca cola stuff(stuff you don't see everyday) and this was a delightful addition to my collection.

I saw this on TV while watching a parade; the emcee had one on the table while announcing. It looks great.
The cost is steep but so are all prices of Coke when compared to production costs. I think the cost of producing a can of Coke is less than a 5 cents. (I drove a Coco Cola executive in a limo back in the 90s)
They make a killing but I say it is worth the price of it is under $1.00. Enjoy

I'm excited about this latest creation, and wondered if it'll be available to Canadians?

I'm a little obsessed. They're gorgeous. And sensible. Keeping my fingers crossed for them to get through the test run.

I was at an event last night here in NYC where they were serving these at the bar. They are so good. The coke actually seems to taste better/fresher coming from these bottles!

I bought one at lunch today. It was $1.69. Still quite high for 8.5 ounces of soda.

I got one each of all three at a fancy vending machine with a giant touch-screen LCD display being demoed at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on 10 January 2009. The price was good...FREE!

The recycling rates for aluminum are over 50%, whereas they're closer to 15% for plastic. If this transfers to the aluminum bottle, it's a win. Plus, the process of creating an aluminum bottle is probably less energy intensive than plastic. Overall, better for the environment.

where are they being marketed in illinois?

They need a 20oz aluminum bottle. I always buy cans over the plastic bottle because cans keep the soda so much colder. Only drawbacks are: you can't replace the top and it's only 12oz. I also can't find these anywhere. I literally live 3 minutes from the Coca-Cola headquarters in Atlanta, but they are no where to be found.

These bottles were originally test marketed in NYC, Philadelphia & Atlanta at high profile clubs and events. As well they tested them at a christian college right outside of Springfield, MO. This was last April 2008 and are probably available to a lot more areas currently. These bottles are all about branding really because they do supposedly cost more to produce these bottles that if they are like the beer bottles are 3 times stronger than the average aluminum can. You will not find these bottles at convienance stores or grocery stores. But if in NYC you will see them at Saks 5th Avenue Cafe. I bet if your at the airport in Atlanta at their Coca-Cola store there you'd probably see it because it creates excitement that you will talk about. Pepsi started their Mountain Dew Green Label Art bottles and test marketed them in Virginia in May 2007. These bottles cost around $2.49 each or $1.99 at conv. stores and it did not go over the best but they then rolled them out nationally in Oct 2008 in conv stores and Walmarts and later came out with another series of GLA bottles plus other Mt Dew aluminum bottles with Americana themes and Nascar themes and even retro Pepsi bottles & then 6 NFL themed Pepsi bottles. But I believe Pepsi made their focus of just releasing a small batch to Walmarts or Targets primarily because of the lack of success in terms of selling them to make money. So by releasing limited batches of these bottles to the big box retailers parents or kids will see these and buy them at a better price at $1.50 and they will show their friends and collect them because of the cool graphics. So this collecting promotes the brand in many ways. First it is like Pepsi is offering their customers a hobby of collecting cool bottles and at the same time people will talk about these bottles with others and since Pepsi/Mountain Dew is doing this it will all resonate it to greater sales when it comes to you having to purchase that drink while at 7-11 or in the grocery isle. Its all about branding with these aluminum bottles to further the brand. It is not about making money off these bottles. Coca-Cola during the Olympics had their We8 line up of aluminum bottles (8 different ones) offered around the country at select Simon owned malls during youth related concerts that were held at these locations with popular acts performing. While there you could chose 1 of 8 bottles off of a interactive plasma screen vending machine. The bottle was free and each bottle was designed by a popular Chinese artist and you would be able to see there artwork inspired design on the screen of the vending machine coming to life there and you'd chose the one you wanted dispensed. In the USA these aluminum bottles have screwable caps for on- the-go-come-back-to convenance. It could be a safety feature while clubbing or is partly a fashion statement, I do not know. But in other countries they have pry off caps. These WE8 bottles were never sold in clubs or stores and were only given out at these mentioned mall concerts (less than 16 events). Currently Coca-Cola has 3 aluminum bottles sold in the USA and they are Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, & Coke Zero. But there is currently plans on releasing a new Sprite drink called Sprite Green that comes with a new sweetener produced by Coca-Cola & Cargil called Truvia which is from the Stevia plant which is around 200 times sweeter than sugar. This drink has 5% real lemon juice and has 12 grams of sugar still. A regular 8.5 ounce serving of Coca-Cola or Sprite is 100 calories but this item will be 50 calories. This new Sprite Green will be the 4th aluminum bottle in the market if they end up releasing this product in the aluminum bottle along with the other 3 that are out there. Even if the product is not sold in the aluminum bottle it will be sold in cans and other containers. To buy these Coca-Cola aluminum bottles type in Coca-Cola aluminum on Ebay and there is a person out there selling these by the case to consume if you like them or like the taste from the aluminum bottle. By typing in Coca-Cola aluminum you see many more Coca-Cola aluminum bottles that are from around the world that are really cool. Type in Sprite aluminum and you will see this new bottle that is currently being sampled at this time in a test market. Type in Mountain Dew aluminum, Pepsi aluminum Budweiser aluminum, & Bud Light aluminum and you will see many cool aluminum bottles that include co branded on some of them like Hard Rock Cafe, Hooters, New York Yankees, and so much more.
