Manufacturer's Brand Overview: [Edit]
Bombilla Gourd is all about the merits of mate. Mate boasts 90% more antioxidants than green tea for fending off nasty free radicals. Plus it offers calm energy from caffeine, theobromine (the euphoric stimulant in dark chocolate) and theophylline (the soothing stimulant in tea), which provide a sustained boost without a crash. There's also 24 vitamins and minerals and 15 amino acids. In Argentina, yerba mate is sipped through a metal straw or "bombilla" and brewed in a hallowed-out "gourd" - hence our name! Our company was launched in summer 2006 when three young entrepreneurs (Tom, Noah & Ariel) left their corporate jobs for green pastures and healthier liquids. Our mate tea is USDA-Organic, only 40 calories per serving and the first mate drink tasty enough for absolutely everyone. Available at Whole Foods, Shaw's, and other retailers.

Blueberry
Category: Tea: Alternative; Packaging: 16 fl oz (473 ml) glass
BevNET Review:
Bombilla Gourd's Blueberry flavored variety is a well formulated addition to the lineup. It starts off with a very pleasant (and natural) blueberry aroma, which carries over nicely to the mild blueberry flavor. We were quite surprised at how well it paired up with the mate. Packaging is clean and to the point, with a presentation that's pleasing to the eye and has a premium vibe. Overall, a job well done by Bombilla Gourd.

Pomegranate
Category: Tea: Alternative; Packaging: 16 fl oz (473 ml) glass
BevNET Review:
Pomegranate and Bombilla Gourd's organic yerba mate pair surprisingly well, resulting in a well balanced flavor that has just the right amount of tea and pomegranate flavors. The pomegranate is derived from flavoring, which makes it somewhat hard to judge its quality. On the other hand, the mate is the real deal. It's certainly the strongest part of the product. The bottle's red color scheme is attractive, giving it a sophisticated look that stands out against the other flavors in the brand. Perhaps the biggest question for this flavor -- just like other pomegranate products -- is whether or not consumers will buy into a pomegranate flavored product (as opposed to one that has real juice).

Lemon
Category: Tea: Alternative; Packaging: 16 fl oz (473 ml) glass
BevNET Review:
As far as premium RTD tea goes, this is more drinkable than most of the ones we’ve sampled. In fact, Bombilla Gourd Mate Tea is so drinkable, we could easily finish an entire bottle in a matter of seconds. The first thing that hits you is the lemon flavor, followed by the light brew of organic yerba mate, which is sweetened with organic cane juice. Unlike other yerba mate products that we’ve sampled over the years, this one is not overly earthy in terms of its flavor and has instead manages to taste mainstream and commercialized. Also notable – especially to the mainstream -- is that this product has a mere 40 calories and 11 g of carbohydrates per serving. Finally, there’s the packaging, which, for a freshman effort, seems quite complete. We like the straight style of the bottle, which gives the product its own personality without breaking the bank.

Mint & Honey
Category: Tea: Alternative; Packaging: 16 fl oz (473 ml) glass
BevNET Review:
If you are already a yerba mate drinker, the Mint & Honey variety of Bombilla Gourd is probably your best bet as it has the strongest tea flavor. While it most likely uses the same brew as the other two flavors, Mint & Honey is a much more subdued additive than lemon or peach. Given the recent proliferation of mint-flavored beverages, we were expecting a slightly stronger mint taste to this product, but Bombilla Gourd has successfully delivered an enjoyable spearmintused these flavors – and they are just that: flavors, not the real thing -- sparingly. Switching to real mint and honey would likely be a costly decision, but it might give this variety a much more defined and enjoyable flavor. Right now, something just doesn’t feel complete about this product, although its packaging remains superior.

Peach
Category: Tea: Alternative; Packaging: 16 fl oz (473 ml) glass
BevNET Review:
Peach is one of those flavors that most RTD teas include, but few actually do justice to. Fortunately, Bombilla Gourd has done a fairly good job, using a peach flavor that has a very nice aroma and the "fuzzy" taste that we look for from peach flavors. Aside from that, this is a well done blend of tea, plain and simple. The mild blend of yerba mate is pleasing to the palate, and the health-conscious consumer will love that its easy on the calories. Packaging is well done, with the orange and green label looking the best of the ones we sampled, as the white logo "pops" better on a darker background than it does on the yellow of the lemon flavor. Overall, this is a nicely executed entry into the premium RTD tea category.
