On the eve of the 2012-13 NFL season, Vita Coco announced today that it has signed four professional football players to join its roster of athlete endorsers. San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Denver Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker, and Chicago wide receiver Devin Hester will represent the coconut water brand and appear in ads promoting its message of “Hydrate naturally.”
Only nine months after its launch, Coco Café is going national. The company recently revealed that it will enter the Dr Pepper Snapple (DPSG) system beginning in early June, a key piece of a national DSD network that the company hopes to complete later this summer. Acute beverage watchers will note that Coco Café is mirroring the same growth path as parent company Vita Coco, which has begun transitioning most of its distribution to national DPSG houses.

When Coco Café first appeared on store shelves last September, it would’ve been easy to assume that the coconut water/latte blend already had some sort of relationship with Vita Coco; the name, design, and packaging of both brands were – for certain – quite similar. Coco Café founders Brian McCaslin and Elan Eifer admittedly admired Vita Coco and its branding, though, at the time, the two companies had no affiliation, a fact that quickly changed following a chance meeting at BevNET Live.

Talk about a whirlwind courtship. It took just four months from organic espresso /coconut water blend Coco Café to go from independent, entrepreneurial beverage company to a strategic piece in the coconut water chess game. The company, which had its first production run in September, had bids from two different potential investors by the end of December and moved into Vita Coco’s offices by the end of January.
After getting rave reviews at the December BevNET Live event — taking home the award during the New Product Showdown — Coco Café had to imagine that it would be getting a lot of attention and some new accounts. But apparently things have really accelerated for the Los Angeles-based espresso/coconut water blend, as Vita Coco, the country’s best selling coconut water brand has swooped in to make an investment in Coco Café.

The Times reports on a new study that found state laws that ban soda – but not other sweetened beverages – to be ineffective in reducing the amount of sugary drinks middle school students buy and consume at school.
