Review: The Cherry Edition Total Zero
One of the two new “Total Zero” flavors to be added to the Red Bull Editions lineup, this product, which is “Wild Cherry” flavored, is definitely a nice tasting zero calorie energy drink. We’d describe the cherry flavor as being that of a black cherry soda, which is certainly a very palatable flavor and one that works well with the sweetener blend of ace-k and aspartame. Plus, it seems like a fitting energy drink flavor in that the black cherry flavoring has a little bit of bite to it. Still, it’s a pretty far departure from Red Bull’s flagship flavor. However, the functional blend in the product includes caffeine (114mg), taurine, and B vitamins, so it is very much a functional beverage. On the outside, Red Bull has chosen a 12 oz slim can that matches the other “Editions.” In the case of the two Total Zero Editions, the products have an unpainted silver backdrop with a single accent color (crimson, in this case). While we like overall design, the lack of a background is a bit tough on the eyes. But, more importantly, we worry that the product’s shelf presence won’t be as good as their more brightly colored competition (who tend to use a lot of black and vibrant colors). Still, if they're after something that’s true to the Red Bull brand and takes a more subtle approach, this product is on the right track. Overall, we really like the formulation and their approach to extending into a flavored zero calorie offering.
