New York, NY, June 10, 2010 – Inc. magazine and Winning Workplaces announced this week the winners and finalists of the 2010 Top Small Company Workplaces competition – the best small and mid-sized places to work in the country – in Inc.’sJune issue. Honest Tea®, the nation's top-selling organic bottled tea company, was featured as a finalist in the top 40 Top Small Company Workplaces of 2010.
Honest Tea was honored for its telecommuting policies – 60 percent of employees work from home and the rest are allowed to telecommute when the need arises. Additionally, Honest Tea was noted for its health and wellness programs, which provides employees with wellness intranet, alternative transportation subsidies, healthy snack packs and wellness coaches. The leaders intentionally sought to build a lean operation where employees are engaged in all aspects of the business, excel at multi-tasking and have great workplace flexibility. Several times a year, the entire workforce is enlisted in "crew-drives" where teams of employees get up before dawn, don Honest-branded t-shirts, shoulder full cooler bags and span out across the country restocking shelves, giving out samples and selling cases of tea to new accounts. This fun, physically-draining "rite of passage" reinforces team spirit and gives all a direct opportunity to affect (and benefit from) the firm's bottom line success. In 2009, revenues grew by 27 percent.
“It’s exciting for Honest Tea to be recognized as a Winning Workplace. The beverage industry is a notoriously tough one to work in, especially for emerging brands. We’re glad we’ve been able to take care of our employees as we’ve grown,” said Seth Goldman, co-founder and TeaEO of Honest Tea.
“We have always strived to maintain our culture, while providing innovative and new benefits to our employees. It’s a real compliment to be recognized for our efforts,” said Debra Schwarz, director of human resources at Honest Tea.
This is the eighth consecutive year that Winning Workplaces, the Evanston, IL-based nonprofit organization, has recognized those firms that attribute much of their business success to their commitment to exemplary people practices and outstanding workplace cultures.
The common characteristics of the Top Small Company Workplaces winners and finalists include a commitment to aligning their workforce with a clear vision, mission, and values; communicating with openness and trust; and investing in employees’ continuous learning and development. These practices were maintained or strengthened as a means to weather the recession. Honest Tea was the only beverage company selected this year.
Winning Workplaces and Inc. received nearly 500 completed applications for the contest. A national panel of experts in leadership and small to mid-sized business judged the finalists based on specific metrics and qualitative assessments of their success in creating the kind of workplaces that engage employees and deliver successful results.
"This year’s honorees show that the quality of the workplace can be a competitive advantage. I’m amazed at how well they have come through the recession. Clearly, their commitment to their values and people practices are an important part of this success," said Gaye van den Hombergh, President of Winning Workplaces.
