Boxed Water Survey Shows Consumer Desire Sustainable Packaging

HOLLAND, Mich. — A new study surveying over 5,000 people across the country reveals 49.7% of consumers will avoid purchasing plastic water bottles due to their unsustainable packaging. Boxed Water, the first national company to offer a sustainable alternative to plastic bottles, commissioned a third-party survey to identify water purchasing behavior across the US.

From the 5,000 consumers polled by Boxed Water across the country, and across age demographics, nearly 80% reported a recognition and understanding of the importance of sustainability. These results reflect the now mainstream consciousness of the problems with plastic and the environmental concerns it presents. As bottled water sales surpass soda, the demand for sustainable packaging presents an incremental growth opportunity for retailers.

“What surprises us most about the survey results, was that nearly every age range and demographic reported a desire for sustainable products; this goes beyond millennials,” said Rob Koenen, Chief Marketing Officer at Boxed Water. “Consumers throughout the U.S. are using the sustainability of a product as the basis in their decision-making.”

92% of respondents feel passionate about shared outdoor environments like forests and oceans. Campaigns that tap into consumers’ interest in eco-friendly activities and actions continue to resonate. For example, Boxed Water’s Better for our Planet project, which enables consumers to plant trees through their social media posts, is entering its fourth year with a larger reach and engagement than ever.

“We’re at an exciting time as an industry where consumers expect brands to align with their values,” said Koenen. “At Boxed Water and all of our retail partners, we show that we’re listening to what consumers want, and that makes all the difference.”
